One of the first dance retrospectives, YOU CAN DANCE featured Madonna's biggest dance hits sequed into one long mix. The songs aren't too different from the original versions, mostly just extended with extra beats, but the Into The Groove mix is great, and Spotlight, a brand new song is a happy little ditty that only adds to the appeal. Into The Groove and Where's The Party were remixed by Shep Pettibone, who would later go on to produce Vogue and much of the album EROTICA. In the end, YOU CAN DANCE is perfect early Madonna.
Spotlight - Originally meant for TRUE BLUE, originally meant for use as a single, Spotlight was dropped from both for fears that it wouldn't do well (although it hit #3 in Japan and top 40 airplay in the US). This super positive song about everybody's chance to shine is screamingly happy, but not too memorable. Into The Groove - One of the greatest dance songs ever, Into The Groove was the b-side to Angel in North America, but was a #1 smash in Europe and has been one of Madonna's most enduring tracks since its first appearance at a dance club in one of Madonna's earliest films, Desperately Seeking Susan. Madonna urges us out onto the dance floor, to be free, and once we do she knows we are hers. Forever. It was the most played non-single song ever when it was first released in 1985. A quickie video was made up of clips from the movie.
