Re-heated Leftovers
July 1999
I've been
thinking about this concept of Soylent Green wondering just where we are
going. The latest thing that this crazy bunch of cooks has cooked up seems
to be more on the lines of a rap/disco parody. Imagine this group performing
something in the genre. The new tune will be titled "Stomping With Z",
yes, it's another Zach song. On Dana's new recording device we laid down
bass drum & snare tracks. The next piece was to have John laid down
a rhythm guitar track. Next Dana & I (yes, that's right) sang the "rapping"
part of the song. It is not finished yet, we need a nice funky guitar &
some more vocal parts. Should be an interesting morsel to add to the Soylent
feast.
Additionally,
John has arranged yet another performance. This Aug. 14th we will be performing
in Adrian Michigan at the Lenawee Christian Center for the Relay for Life
cancer benefit. Rumor has it that we will go on stage around 4:00pm. During
practice discussions, we have kicked around the idea of performing primarily
an electric set, however, may also do some acoustic numbers. Should be
fun. For more details, email me & I will give directions. Bark2000@yahoo.com

June 1999
This month, we are proud to announce a new song, "All
I Have, All I Know" or maybe we should change it to "The Finest Gift"
because that is what we call it anyway. Dana wrote the chorus and music
and Mike filled in the choruses. Chris showed up to use Dana's new 8-Track
digital recorder to add guitar and vocals. It is a much more mellow piece
than we have been writing recently, but I think it is a nice change.
In web
news, Chris attempted to change the audio files to streaming and botched
it all up. Sorry! Some of it is fixed now; maybe I'll try again once I
am on vacation. I also put the "Random Soylent Green Song" in a separate
window so you can click on it whenever you have a hankerin' for a tune.
We will
be concentrating on recording and writing this summer, so be on the lookout
for some more new songs.

After a rocky start, we have officially declared our coffee
house gig at Dolce's Cafe a success. At least we proved that we can
throw a performance together at the last minute and still sound pretty
damn good! Whether it spawns more live opportunities for us or not, it
looks like we are going back into the studio to work on several new recordings.
Be on the lookout for some fresh originals in the near future.
In web
news, we have been linked by a couple new sites. The Progressive
Rock Ring has welcomed us after a few technical glitches and we are
now catalogued on The Ultimate Band List.
We are also part of MPulse, a service
that ranks the most popular music sites on the web. I have made many updates
to the site as well. I put it all in frames at the beginning of April and
have since changed it all back finding frames to be more trouble than they
are worth. The home of SG does have a new look, a new section, "Photos",
and many minor polishings that probably only I would notice.
April 1999
April should
be a good month for Soylent Green. We just finished recording Wondering
Why and Wired made the top 50
downloads on Free-Music.com. (I believe it maxed at #37.) John got us a
coffee house gig at Dolce's Cafe in Adrian for the end of April sometime.
Look for more info when I get all the details. If you like us, please attend.
We always sound better with a friendly audience.
I have just finished
making some renovations to the site. Please feel free to e-mail
me with your feedback. In addition to some cosmetic changes, I added
a few new pages. Recipes has some creative
ways to serve Soylent Green to an ever discriminating family, plus a way
to submit your own favorite dishes. Contact
Us has more info on how to find the members in cyber-space, plus a
survey
where you can vote for what you feel is the best new SG song. There is
a quiz to test your trivial knowledge of
the band members. Links has sites that we
exchange links with, plus other random Soylent Green sites. I also polished
up the
guestbook. It is sort of like a
message board, so if you have any thoughts you'd like to share, please
add
something.
Mike and Chris
(me) also added some stuff to our bio pages. Now that I am fairly proud
of what we have, please rank
our site from the home page if you like it. The last time I checked
out the highest ranked music sites they were not as good as ours.

March 1999
It seems that
we are finally putting the finishing touches on Wondering Why.
Look for the finished product on our site soon. It sounds fairly good I
think, but it has taken us to a new realm of technical problems. Hopefully
we will begin recording on Dana's 8 Track digital soon. He needs to get
a zip drive for it and we will be in business.
In performance
news, Mike has ordered a coffee house drum set. It should be the centerpiece
of a nice acoustic combo for small cafes and restaurants. We have been
working on a few blues and jazz standards, plus the originals, so keep
on the lookout for Soylent Green being served at a coffee house near you!
Our last practice
we were supposed to jam with a female jazz singer. She ended up getting
sick so we did some recording instead. We got a lot of work done on Wondering
Why but did not have time to work on All of Me. I
am just interested in playing with Dave the keyboardist. It is weird being
in a band with people you have never met.
We have been
added to the "Free Music" ring. Just use the controls on our front page
to find other sites with free music. Some are cool, some aren't, but take
a chance. A spirit of adventure is a good thing. If you would like a guaranteed
good free music site check out "Twisted Helices" at http://www.twisted-helices.com/th/
unless you are afraid of twisted creative noise.
Just for fun,
Mike has made a Soylent Green word search
for your amusement. Bon Appetite!

Well,
it looks like we are taking the turn to a blues/jazz combo. I guess it
does not take too long to get sick of playing in red-neck piss-hole bars.
We are going to try for the Restaurant or Coffee House gigs. Sounds nice
and peaceful, if we can coerce Mike into not rockin' out on his drum set!
Also we are waiting
for Dana to get his 8 track digital recorder. With that we will probably
re-record some old S.G. standards and some new tunes and try to make a
decent quality CD. We will hopefully try to sell some over the Internet
and are looking into ways to promote it. We have been posted in the Real
Audio section of The Free Music Archive.
Look for a couple tunes there.
In other Internet
news, John has connected (though he has not tried ICQ or MPlayer yet) which
leaves Dana as the only Luddite left in the band. I am doing some research
on adding some text and graphics to our music files and getting them to
be streaming instead of just compressed. Maybe we can look forward to a
live performance over the Internet this summer?
