RRIINNGG....RRIINNGG......RRIII
“Yo”
“Yo yourself Jules” said August, in response to her friend’s way of answering the phone. It was a
nice spring day, in early 1997. It was unusually warm, so August Mayer had decided to spend the
day outside. August was sitting on her front porch in Rockford Illinois looking for something to
do. She had just called her best friend Julie and they were now deep in the conversation.
“Hey, Jules, could you hold on a sec? I have another call coming in.” August paused, and then
clicked over to the call-waiting.
“Hello?”
“Hi honey, its Mom. Your father and I need to talk to you about some things. We have some
news for you. We’re about 5 minutes away, so could you please be off the phone by the time we
get home?” asked her mother.
August sighed. “Yea mom, I’ll get off.”
“Thanks hun!” See you in a bit.” replied her mother.
“Bye.”
“Bye”
August clicked back over to where Julie had started amusing herself by singing along with the
radio. Just as August started to say something, Julie burst out into a song the August had never
heard before.
“MMMBOP BA DUBA DOP BA DU BOP DUBA DOP BA DU.......MMMBOP!!” sang
Julie.
“Julie! What on earth are you singing?!” yelled August.
“I dunno, its some new song by some group named Hanson. Its pretty cool. I think its three
girls who sing it.” replied Julie matter-of-factly.
“Well, thats nice, I’ll have to listen to it sometime, without your off-key accompaniment. But, I
have to go, my parents want me off the phone by the time they get home, they have to talk to me
about something. Speaking of...they just pulled into the driveway, so I gotta go.”
“Ok, C-Ya”
“Chow”
“August, you are so weird!” laughed Julie.
“Bye”
“Bye”
Click. August hung up the phone and walked over to the TV. She flipped it on and over to MTV.
Just as she turned it there, the VJ said, “Now, heres a special treat for you. Heres the debut single
for the new group, Hanson. They’re made up of three brothers. Isaac 16, Taylor 13, and 11 year
old Zac. I hope you like the video, I sure do! Here’s Hanson with ‘MMMBOP’.” August stared at
the TV. The lead singer, she guessed it was Taylor, was very cute. She watched the video with a
big grin on her face. “I like these Hansons” thought August.
“Honey, we’re home!” called her Dad from the kitchen.
“Ok, Dad, I’m in here!” August called back.
A few seconds later, her parents appeared in the doorway.
“We need to talk to you August.” said her mom. She had a huge grin on her face, so August
could tell that this was something fairly good.
“Ok, shoot.”
“Well, there’s two things. First thing,” her mother sighed “I’m pregnant.” August looked back
and forth between her parents. She was soooo happy!
“Awesome!! I’ve always wanted a
little brother or sister!”
“I’m glad you’re happy August.” smiled her mom.
“Ok, now, on to the second thing.” said her dad.
He and Mrs. Mayer exchanged nervous
glances.
“Honey, we’ve decided to move.” he said cautiously.
“What? We’re moving? Why? Where? When?” exclaimed August. This was not the kind of news
she wanted to hear.
“We’re moving to be closer to family. My mother is very sick and I think its only right that we be
there for her. You haven’t really even met the whole family.” he replied, feeling sorry for her.
“We’re moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Thats where both your mother and I grew up. She has
friends there that you’ll be staying with for awhile until we find a house. For the rest of the year,
and maybe for longer, Diana will be home schooling you. She home schools all her kids. She has
7. I believe that their ages are 16, 13, 11, 8, 6 and 3. There’s one your age even. You’ll be leaving
in on week.”
August got up and walked out of the room.
“August, where are you going?” asked her mother.
“To Julies. I’ll be back later. Bye” called August, about to cry.
Once she had stepped out of the house, she began to cry. She ran down her side walk, and down
the street to Julie’s. She kept running until she got to the doorstep. Since she and Julie had known
each other forever, August was allowed to just walk right in. She opened the door and kept crying
all the way up the stairs to Julie’s room. She quietly knocked and sat on the floor with her head in
her hands. Julie opened the door, only to see her best friend crying uncontrollably on the
floor.
