“Melissa, stop writing for a sec.” I said to my best friend.
“I can’t Dave! If I stop writing, the feelings in my head will just explode!” Melissa continued to write furiously in her notebook.
Melissa, my best friend, like me, is 15 years old, but she’s older than I am by 4 months. She loves to write. You could say that writing is her passion. She also loves photography and music, but well, writing is way up there, on the top of her list, next to DAVE MOFFATT. That’s me.
My name is Dave Moffatt (No Kidding). I have 3 older brothers, named Scott, Clint and Bob. Clint and Bob are older than I am by a couple minutes, because we’re triplets. Not identical triplets, though. It’s hard to explain without getting into details. Melissa can explain it though. She used her fallopian tube theory, and scared a couple of 2nd graders.
I laughed out loud.
Melissa looked up from her notebook at me. Then shrugged and continued to write.
Like Melissa, I have dark brown hair and dark brown eyes. I guess Mel and I are pretty similar. We’re both pretty talkative, and we’re both artistic. I’m more into drawing than writing, and Melissa is the other way around. You should see her when she’s on the computer. She types at lighting speed…and then there’s me…no comment!
“Ok Dave, I’m done.” Melissa said, closing her notebook, and stuffing the pen in the back pocket of her jeans. “What do you want to do now?”
“Well, Melissa. I want to know what happened today. What feelings did you have in your head, that is now written in your notebook?”
“Well, you know how Alex is totally after me, and how much I don’t like it?” asked Melissa.
“Yes.” I said.
“Well, you know how, Steve, his best friend promised me that Alex won’t call or talk to me again?”
“Yes.”
“Well, you know that I have caller ID, and no one picks up the phone when Alex calls. Well, guess what happened? After Alex lied to me about me being his girlfriend, even though I’m not, Steve called Alex over to his house, and they called me on Steve’s line! I didn’t know that it was Alex calling, instead of Steve!”
“Oh no!” I cried. “Alex is such an ass!”
“I know! When I told Alex that I didn’t want to talk to him, Steve messaged me on ICQ saying that I was so damn rude to Alex! Then he told my friend that he didn’t tell Alex to call, but he did! Steve told me that he owed Alex a favor!”
“What an ass! I’m gonna kill him!”
Melissa clenched her fists together. So hard, her knuckles were almost white. I placed my hands over hers and kept it there. Melissa started to tremble.
“Why?” She asked softly.
“Why what?” I asked.
“Why can’t they just take no for an answer?” Melissa sniffled.
She was starting to cry. I held her close in my arms, letting my new blue T-shirt soak in her tears.
Just then, Scott walked down the street, carrying his guitar case. When he saw Melissa there, sitting on our front lawn, crying in my arms, he ran onto the grass, put down his guitar case and his bag, and ran up to us.
“Melissa?” Scott asked, petting her hair, he looked at me. “Dave, what’s wrong?”
Before I could say anything, Steve and Alex came down the street.
“Shit.” I said.
Scott looked at me.
“They caused this.” I looked down at Melissa.
Anger filled Scott’s eyes.
Scott and I are the closest to Melissa among my brothers and I. Melissa is like a little sister to Scott, and like what a big brother should do, he’s going to protect her.
Scott walked over to the two and glared at them. “What are you doing here?” he asked.
“Just taking a walk.” Alex sneered. He was slightly shorter than Scott and my brothers, but Steve is about half a head taller than we are.
“Why do you even care?” asked Steve.
“What do you mean by that?” I asked, Melissa still cradled in my arms.
“We’re just going to visit Melissa, but I guess she’s out here.” Alex took a step towards Mel and me.
“Back off.” Scott warned. His face inches from Steve’s.
Alex and Steve laughed. “In your dreams.” They turned to me. “Give me Melissa.”
“In your dreams!” I yelled, holding Melissa tighter around me. I needed to get up, so I helped Melissa up and set her on the front steps. I looked at Scott. His face is still inches from Steve’s. Alex is glaring at me.
“Give me my girlfriend.” Alex demanded.
“She’s not your girlfriend!” I yelled.
“Yes she is!” He took another step towards me.
“Give her to me!” Alex yelled.
Melissa got up from the steps and ran up to Alex and me.
“Stop it Alex! I don’t need shit from you! I don’t like you! I’m not your girlfriend! I don’t want to be your girlfriend!”
Ooh, I’ve never seen Melissa get so angry before.
“Lissa, that’s not true.” Alex said softly.
Melissa grabbed Alex’s collar and yanked it. I’ve never seen her do that before!
“Look you asshole. I don’t like you. I’ll never like you. Leave me alone!” Melissa yelled.
Then, Alex did something that set Scott and me on fire.
He raised his hand and slapped Melissa hard across the face. Melissa fell down from the hard blow. For Alex’s size, he’s strong.
“ASSHOLE!” I screamed and punched Alex. He punched me back. Then, Scott jumped him, and Steve jumped into the pile.
I held my upper arm in pain and looked down at Melissa, who was covering her cheek. As soon as I jumped into the pile of boys, Clint and Bob came out of the house.
“Holy shit!” Bob cried. He ran to us and pulled Steve off of Scott. Clint got a hold of Steve, when he took a run at Melissa, who was by the steps, feeling dizzy.
“Stop it!” Clint yelled.
Alex and Steve got up feeling totally defeated.
“We’ll be back Melissa!” Alex yelled. “And this time, I don’t take ‘No’ for an answer!”
“Oh screw off!” Clint yelled.
We all ran over to Melissa, who was resting her head against the side of the house.
“Melissa? Are you ok?” asked Scott.
Melissa slowly got up and attempted to walk up the three steps that led to our house. She was unsuccessful. She passed out and fell into my arms.
Scott and I carried her into my room. Yes surprisingly, after days of begging dad, he finally allowed each of us to have our own rooms. Since Clint and Scott are the oldest, they had rooms in the basement. Lucky ducks!
Anyway, Melissa was lying on my bed, looking like a helpless girl. Her cheek was very red. I gently touched her cheek, and she flinched. I felt so bad!
“Melissa?” I whispered.
Scott walked into the room with a wet washcloth. He handed it to me.
“Poor girl.” Scott whispered. “She totally didn’t deserved that.” He gave Melissa another sad look, then walked out of the room.
“I know.” I said, watching her. I swept some of her hair away from her face. Her face is really cute. She has long curly black lashes, a cute nose, and full lips. She’s really cute. I guess that’s why people pay a lot of attention to her.
I don’t know why I’m her best friend though. I mean, there are lots of better looking guys out there in the city. Why did she pick me? Why not Scott? Or Clint? Or Bob? Why me?
“Dave?” Melissa whispered.
“Yes Melissa?” I asked. Her eyes were still closed.
“Thanks for being there for me.”
“You’re welcome. Remember, you’re my best friend!”
“You’re mine.” She whispered. She groaned slightly. “Dave?”
“Yes?” I asked, taking her hand.
“I love you.”
