WHAT? I dropped her hand, and took a step back away from her. OH MY GOD…I looked at Melissa, she fell asleep.
What am I gonna do? Melissa loves me! BUT she said that in her sleep! She must have said, ‘I love you like a brother’! She must have!
I don’t know what to say! AHHH!
Scott walked into the room again. “Any difference?” he asked.
“No…yeah…I mean…I don’t know!” I cried.
“Shh!” Scott shushed me, he pushed me out of my room and closed the door.
“She said something to me.” I said.
“What did she say?”
“She said…She…” I stammered. “She said that…I can’t say it.”
“Did she say that she loves you?” Scott asked.
I gasped. “How did you know?”
“Well, when people are dizzy and stuff, they usually say weird things in their head. She might have meant that she loves you like a brother, or she loves you.”
A week later, we were invited to Vivian’s 16th birthday party. When Melissa and I got there, a guy was already there.
“Hey!” Vivian said with a smile. “Meet Lucas.”
“Hey.” Melissa blushed.
Lucas was a pretty good looking guy, with short dark brown hair, and light brown eyes. He’s slightly taller than Melissa is and well, just by looking at the expression on Mel's face, I think she thinks that he’s cute.
More and more people came, and I knew most of them. The last person walked through the door…was Alex. Melissa gasped. She ran to Vivian.
“Could I please invite my friend, Wendy here?” she begged.
Vivian nodded. “Sure.”
Melissa grabbed my hand and ran to the phone.
“Wendy?” she said to her best girl friend. “Alex is here, you HAVE to come!”
Wendy must have said ‘Yes’, because Melissa cried “THANK YOU!” She hung up the phone, and threw her arms around me.
We walked back into the basement, and Alex began to stare at us. Scott, Clint and Bob couldn’t come, because, well, they don’t even know Vivian.
Then, someone took out the alcohol. They passed around like, 40 bottles. Melissa refused to take any. I took a sip and gagged. It was disgusting! I looked at the label. ‘Mike’s Hard Lemonade’. YUCK! Melissa and I watched as the 13 other people took drinks from their bottles.
I watched as Lucas took another bottle, then another, then another. I watched Vivian taking a couple more bottles, and Justin took another bottle too.
Justin was Melissa’s old boyfriend. They were pretty close, but they’re still friends.
Everyone was taking another bottle, and they were staring at me. I could feel the peer pressure. I glanced at Melissa. She was taking a sip from her coke. She looked at me and smiled, handed me the coke and I took a sip.
“Come on! Let’s play video games!” Vivian cried, and staggered back down to the basement. The others followed her. Melissa and I got up, and started to walk downstairs, when Lucas passed out. He got up, and fell to the ground beads of sweat forming in his head.
“Lucas?” I asked.
He was out.
Melissa and I picked him up and sat him down on the chair.
“Oh my god.” Melissa whispered when she realized when Lucas’ eyes aren’t focusing. Lucas looked dazed and confused. “Poor guy.” Melissa whispered. “Lucas?”
“Bathroom.” Lucas choked out. He staggered towards the stairs. Melissa and I walked with him, each holding his arm to support him. We walked him upstairs. He walked into the bathroom and closed the door. Melissa and I looked at each other. A couple minutes passed. Melissa slowly turned the knob on the door, and peeked inside. Lucas was wiping his mouth, and staggered out of the bathroom.
“Lucas, let us help you.” We took his arms again.
Lucas tipped forward and tripped on the first couple steps dragging Melissa and me down with him. Ouch.
Melissa and I helped Lucas up again, and went outside onto the deck. We set Lucas down and looked around. Something caught my eye in the crowd. It was Wendy and Alex…oh no.
“You leave Melissa alone!”
“Don’t you tell me what to do!”
“Leave her alone, or I’ll kick your ass!”
“MAKE ME!”
“Guys!” Anna cried, separating the two.
Melissa started to cry. I wanted to go to her, but I had to watch Lucas, who was still on the chair. I looked at Justin. He nodded, and ran to Melissa and gave her a hug.
“YOU GET YOU HANDS OF MY GIRLFRIEND!” screamed Alex.
“She is NOT your girlfriend!” Justin cried, protecting Melissa with his arms.
“YES SHE IS!” Alex screamed and punched Justin hard in the eye.
“Justin!” Melissa screamed as Justin fell down on the deck in a heap.
“Come here!” Alex growled.
“How many bottles did he drink?” I cried.
“About 6!” Anna replied a frantic look on her eyes.
Just when Alex was about to lay one of his gross hands on Melissa, I ran towards him and pushed him away. Anna and Wendy lifted Justin from the deck and carried him into the basement, where there’s a couch and a bed. Melissa and I helped Lucas down to the basement and onto the couch. Alex, on the other hand, was too drunk to even get up.
When both Justin and Lucas were in the basement, Melissa turned to me. “Thanks Dave. I’ll take care of them. You go upstairs and have fun. Look after Wendy.”
I looked at her. “Are you sure?” I asked.
“Yes, I’m sure.” She said, her eyes sparkling.
Oh, I get it. She wants some alone time with Justin and the cute boy.
“Ok, call me if you need me.”
“Yup!” Melissa said, walking back towards the guys.
I went upstairs, and looked for Wendy. She was in a deep conversation with this guy Danny. Ok…what should I do now? Ooh, there’s a piano here…so…I guess it’s practice time!
So, while everyone were drinking, and playing video games…with the occasional puking…and then there’s me, playing some songs on the piano.
Half an hour passed already, so I decided to check on Melissa. I went downstairs, and opened the door slightly.
“So, do you like him?” I heard someone say. It must be Justin.
“Yeah, I do. He’s really cute.” That’s Melissa!
“Well, then, follow your heart.”
“I don’t think he even likes me that way!”
“Well, he’s better than Alex, isn’t he? By the way, I hate him. He’s such an ass.”
“Well, you’re still cute with a black eye, and you’ll always be one of my buddies.”
“Thanks Melissa.”
I knocked on the door. Melissa opened it, and when she saw me, she smiled.
“Hey Dave.” She said.
“Hey Mel, are they doing better?” I asked.
“Yeah, Justin is better now.” She pointed to him, who was sitting at the head of the bed. I looked at Lucas. His eyes were closed, and there’s a washcloth on his head.
I sat down on the bed, facing Justin.
Melissa was sitting by Lucas, patting his head. “Ooh, your hair is so soft!” she squealed. Lucas smiled slightly. “Ooh, what a cute little boy! Look at your face! Aww!” she cried.
Justin and I leaned down and looked at Lucas. Yup, he has this adorable smile on his face…aww.
Just then, the door banged opened…and in walked…Alex, his eyes out of focus, and his breath reeked of hard liquor…
