I dropped my glass. It fell to the ground and shattered. I looked at the others. Their faces were white. Oh my god…
“Tests have shown that both of the young boys were drunk. The driver was Holloway, and they crashed into a tree before they lost control and fell into the ditch. Now remember kids. Don’t drink and drive.”
Clint and Bob turned away from the TV and looked at us.
“They’re dead.” Clint whispered.
“I don’t believe this.” Scott said.
“We were with them yesterday.” I said, indicating Melissa and me.
“They’re gone.” Bob said.
Melissa sniffled.
We all looked at each other, and then sadly at the ground.
Scott walked over to Melissa and me, and hugged us. A couple seconds later, Bob and Clint joined us. For about 15 minutes, we just hugged each other.
Two days passed…
Melissa was acting back to normal now. The last two days were one of the very worst two days ever. Melissa was acting down in the dumps. She wanted to tell Alex that she was sorry, but it was too late. It’s like as if the whole situation is tearing her up inside.
A LOT of people came to Steve and Alex’s funeral. Even the ones that don’t like them came to the funeral.
I still feel a little guilty about Alex and the party. I knew it wasn’t my fault, but still.
You know, you get this really weird and sick feeling about yourself when someone you know dies. I don’t know. I feel really weird today.
I walked to the telephone and called Melissa.
“Hey Mel.” I said when she picked up the phone.
“Hey Davey. Wanna come over today? The others can come too.”
“Sure. See you in a bit.” I said and hung up the phone. “WE’RE GOING TO MELISSA’S HOUSE!” I hollered on the top of my lungs.
“Ok!” the others said, and got changed.
I went into my room to get my watch. When I returned downstairs, Scott, Clint and Bob were ready.
“Come on, let’s go.” I said, walking out the door, ran across the lawn, and rang the doorbell.
Calvie (*LOL* Inside joke to some of my friends!), Melissa’s pet tabby cat greeted me by the door.
“Hey Cal.” I said, bending down to pat its furry little head. That’s when I felt a sneeze coming. I’m very allergic to cats.
“Hey Dave, Scott, Clint, Bob.” Said Calvin, Melissa’s neighbor.
“Hey Cal.” Scott said. The cat looked up at him. We laughed.
You see, Calvin lives on the other side of Melissa’s house. His cat, Carmel had kittens, and they gave one to Melissa. Since Melissa recently had a crush on Calvin, she decided to name the kitten after him, therefore, naming it Calvie. Funny, eh?
Melissa opened and smiled at us. “Hey guys!” she said. “Hey Calvin!”
“Hey Melissa, how are you?” he asked.
“I’m fine, thanks!” Melissa smiled. “Do you want to join us?”
“Well, my cousins are coming over, and I have to take them around.”
“Well, you could invite them over.”
“Sure. I guess so. Oh yeah, guys? My cousins are pretty girls. Are you interested?”
Scott laughed. “Sure!”
We walked inside.
“I’ll come when they arrive!” Calvin called.
“Ok!” Melissa waved, and closed the door. She turned to us. “Actually, it’s a nice day outside. Let’s go out and play something.”
“Ok.” We said.
We went out onto her front yard. We grabbed a football and started to throw it around. When Clint threw it to me, Melissa ran and tackled me to the ground, so alas, Melissa was on top of me. I could feel my heart beating very, very quickly. I think I’m having a heart attack.
“Dave? Are you ok?” Melissa asked, peering down closer to me.
“I’m fine.” I gasped.
The weird thing is, for some reason, I don’t want Melissa to get off of me. (Don’t even think like that!) I like her presence.
Slowly, Melissa got off of me. She stood up, and held her hand down to me for me to take. I grabbed her hand and yanked hard, sending her flying back down to me.
The others watched in amazement as the whole thing was happening. Scott, Bob, Clint, Calvin, and even Cal, the cat!
Then I did it. I kissed her. I could hear everyone else’s gasps. It was just a little peck on the lips, quick and easy. The others watched, stunned.
Melissa slowly got up, sucking in quick breaths and walked to a nearby tree, her back facing me.
Scott motioned me to stay put, and walked over to Melissa, placing a comforting arm around her shoulders.
Clint, Bob and Calvin walked to me.
“Whoa, that was good.” Clint said.
“What do you mean by that?” I demanded.
“I mean that I’d never do that to a girl. You’ve got guts, Big D.”
“Thanks.” I grumbled.
“I think you shocked her.” Said Bob.
“Great.”
“Well, you know what? I think she enjoyed it.”
I turned to look at Calvin.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“Well, she told me that she had a crush on you.”
“Really?” I asked.
“You know, she needs to tell a person who isn’t related to you.” He said, looking at me and my brothers.
“Who else did she tell?” I asked.
“Well, she told me…Justin and Wendy, I think.”
“Oh…”
“Well Dave. I think that she’s been sending signals and stuff.” Said Calvin.
I smacked my head. “Oww.”
Clint laughed. “Dave Moffatt, you are SUCH an idiot!”
For once, I agreed with him.
