Around noon the next day, Amy and Katie were down at the river with Bob and Clint. They were at the same place that they had gone swimming at last time. Of course, Katie was diving off of the rocks again. When she got tired of diving off of the same rock, she decided to jump of one that was about four feet taller than the one she was already diving off of. The one she had been originally diving off of was about ten feet tall, so that made the other one about fourteen feet tall. When she was standing on top of it, she yelled, “Hey!” down to Amy, Bob and Clint.
“Katie, that rock’s too high!” shouted Amy, shading her eyes from the afternoon sun.
“You’re gonna hurt yourself!” exclaimed Bob.
“You’ll break your neck!” added Clint.
“No, I won’t,” Katie shouted. Before they could protest anymore, she dove into the water. Amy, Bob, and Clint waited for her to come up to the surface. After a few seconds, she still hadn’t come up.
“Where’d she go?” asked Clint.
“I don’t know,” Amy and Bob answered puzzled. They began looking around for Katie. They had been looking for about five seconds, when Amy exclaimed, “Oh, my gosh!” and pointed to the rocks. Katie was floating, face down, just below the rocks. Amy started crying, and Bob and Clint swam towards her as fast as they could, with Amy following at a slower pace. When Bob and Clint got to her, they turned her face up so that she could breathe. When Amy got to Bob, Clint, and Katie, she asked through her sobs, “Is s-she okay?”
“I don’t know,” Clint and Bob said at the same time. Just then, Katie opened my eyes and started laughing. Amy stopped crying, and started laughing too. Bob and Clint looked at us quizzically.
“What’s going on?” asked Bob.
“Did we miss something?” asked Clint. Katie stopped floating on her back, and started walking towards the shore so that she could stand, since she couldn’t touch where they were. Amy followed her, both of them still laughing. Bob and Clint looked at each other, both of them with confusion painted on their faces. They followed Amy and Katie, waiting to hear an explanation.
“What just happened?” asked Bob. When Amy and Katie stopped laughing, Katie told them.
“Last night, Amy and I decided that I would dive off a somewhat high rock, and pretend to hurt myself, and that Amy would go along with it pretending to cry. Which, might I add, you did an awesome job at,” Katie said to Amy, giving her a high-five.
“So, you faked hurting yourself as a joke?” asked Bob.
“Pretty much,” Katie replied.
“Why?” asked Clint.
“Good humour,” she answered, laughing. Bob, not finding the slightest bit of humor in it at all, dove underwater, grabbed her around both of her ankles, and jerked hard. Katie’s feet flew out from underneath her, and she collapsed into the water. She came up sputtering for air.
“What was that for?!” she exclaimed to Bob.
“That was not funny at all,” he said.
“It was a joke!”
“Yeah, well, what if you really had hurt yourself? Huh? Then what?”
“I wasn’t gonna hurt myself.”
“You could’ve. Very easily.” Katie just glared at him for a second, then started swimming over to the rocks. Bob swam to the shore, and sat on the blanket they had spread out underneath a tree.
“Uh-oh,” Amy said to Clint.
“What?” he asked.
“I think they’re mad at each other.”
Clint shook his head. “Nah, Bob’s not mad. I think it just freaked him out a little.”
“I’m gonna go talk to Katie,” said Amy, and she started swimming over to her. “Hey,” she said, climbing up on the rocks.
“That was funny, wasn’t it?” Katie asked her.
Amy nodded. “I thought so. I still think that Bob likes you. He’s worried about you,” she said.
Katie shook her head and rolled her eyes. “No, he’s mad at me. And he can go ahead and be mad at me, I don’t care. If he can’t take a joke, then that’s his problem.”
Amy smiled. “It’ll work out.” She slid back into the water. A few minutes later, Bob started swimming towards Katie. “Great, just what I want,” she thought to herself. She stared straight ahead, pretending not to see him.
“Hey,” he said as he climbed onto the rock and sat down next to Katie.
“Hi,” she said shortly, still staring straight ahead.
“Look, I’m sorry about pulling you underwater. I just didn’t think what you did was funny.”
“It was a joke, gosh,” Katie said, turning to look at him, then continuing to stare ahead.
“I know. It’s just…I don’t want anything to happen to you,” Bob said. Katie turned and looked at him. “Just be careful, okay?”
“Okay,” Katie said nodding.
“Thanks,” he said smiling. Katie smiled back. “Come on,” he said as he slid into the water. Katie slid in after him, and they swam over to where Amy and Clint were.
