The next day, Clint called Scott and Michelle’s and asked if Amy and Katie wanted to come and hang out. They did, so Rhonda drove them to the hotel, telling them she would pick them up before she, Scott, and Michelle went out to dinner.
Before she dropped them off, Amy asked, “Can Bob and Clint come over while you guys are at dinner?”
“I’ll talk to Scott and Michelle, and let you guys know,” Rhonda answered.
“Okay,” Katie and Amy said.
Meanwhile, up in Clint and Bob’s room, Clint and Bob were trying to clean the room up a little, and Scott and Dave were watching them.
“Why are you guys cleaning the room? They have maids to do stuff like that,” said Scott.
“Because Amy and Katie are coming,” answered Bob.
“I swear, you guys are always with them,” said Dave.
“No, we’re not,” Clint argued.
“You are so. You guys like them, huh?” said Scott.
Bob and Clint stopped shoving some garbage in the garbage can, and turned to look at Scott. “No,” they said at the exact same time.
“Yeah, you do,” said Scott
“No, we don’t,” Bob and Clint argued.
“Yes, you do. You’re always with them. Yesterday, you went to the river with them, who knows what you guys will end up doing today.”
“We don’t like them,” said Clint.
“Yeah, they’re just friends,” agreed Bob.
“Whatever. Dave, they like them, huh?” Scott asked his younger brother.
“Hey, this is your argument, not mine,” Dave said, holding up his hands.
Scott turned back to Bob and Clint. “You like them,” he said.
“For the millionth time, no we don’t!” exclaimed Bob. As they continued arguing, Amy and Katie knocked on the door. Dave answered it, since it was obvious that Scott, Bob, or Clint weren’t going to.
“Yes, you do!” exclaimed Scott.
“No, we don’t!” Bob and Clint exclaimed back.
“Yes, you do,” Katie said. Bob, Clint, and Scott all turned and looked at her. “Hey, even though I don’t know what you’re arguing about, that doesn’t stop me any. I just put in my two cents,” she said holding up her hands.
“We’re arguing over whether Bob and Clint-,” Scott started. Bob ran over and put his hand over Scott’s mouth.
“We weren’t arguing about anything, nothing at all. Scott and Dave were just leaving, weren’t you?” said Bob.
“Uh, yeah. See ya,” said Dave, going out the door. Bob took his hand away from Scott’s mouth.
“No, we weren’t just leaving. We still haven’t decided whether or not-,” said Scott.
“Goodbye, Scott!” Clint said, cutting him off. He shoved him out into the hall, and closed the door. “Anyways…”
“I’m thirsty,” Bob announced.
“Me too,” Katie agreed.
“Wanna go down to the lobby and get a pop?” suggested Bob.
“Sure,” she agreed.
“We’ll be right back,” said Bob.
“Okay,” said Clint and Amy as Bob and Katie left the room.
“What were you, Bob, and Scott arguing about?” Amy asked Clint after Bob and Katie had left.
“Oh, nothing,” Clint answered. He reached over and turned on the radio. A song was just ending, and ‘Kiss me’ by Sixpence None the Richer was just starting.
“I love this song,” said Amy. Amy sung along with it. “Kiss me,” she sang, singing the first line. Clint, on impulse, picked up Amy’s right hand and kissed it. Amy looked at him in surprise. “What was that for?” she asked.
Clint shrugged. “I don’t know. I just felt like doing it,” he answered. The next time Amy sang ‘kiss me,’ Clint kissed her left hand. Each time Amy sang ‘kiss me,’ Clint would kiss her somewhere different. He kissed her nose, both of her eyes, her forehead twice, her left and right cheek, and her neck. The last time Amy sang ‘kiss me,’ Clint kissed her lips. Right when he did this, Bob and Katie walked into the room.
“Oh, really!” Katie exclaimed.
“Woo-hoo, go Clint!” said Bob. Amy and Clint both blushed, and looked down at the bedspread.
“You got something that you wanna share with the class there?” Katie asked.
“No,” they answered quickly.
“Okay,” Katie said slowly, she and Bob sat down on Bob’s bed. The four of them sat around and talked while listening to the radio.
When there was a break in the conversation, Amy asked, “Oh, do you guys wanna come hang out at my relative’s tonight?”
“Yeah, sure” said Bob and Clint.
“Okay. My mom and her cousins are going out to dinner, so we’d be home alone. Well, except for Brian and Kristy, my mom’s cousin’s kids,” said Amy.
“Okay, cool,” said Clint. Amy called her mom to make sure that they could come over. Scott and Michelle had decided that they could, so Rhonda would just bring Bob and Clint back to Scott and Michelle’s when she picked up Amy and Katie. When Rhonda came to pick everyone up, Clint and Bob made sure that they had their room key, then the four of them went out to the car. When they got to Scott and Michelle’s, Amy introduced everybody. Ten minutes after the introductions, Rhonda, Scott and Michelle left, leaving Amy, Brian, Kristy, Bob, Clint, and Katie with money to order pizza and a movie to keep them entertained.
“What movie did you guys rent?” Katie asked Kristy.
“’I Still Know What You Did Last Summer’,” she answered.
“Oh, cool,” said Katie.
“Come on, let’s order the pizza, I’m starving!” exclaimed Brian.
“Okay,” the rest of us agreed. We figured out what kind of pizza we wanted, and then called the pizza place. When the pizza got there, everyone ate until they were full, then went into the den to watch ‘I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.’ When they got into the den, Brian put in the movie, then turned out the lights.
“What’d you do that for?” Katie asked as Brian settled on the floor next to his sister.
“We always watch movies in the dark,” Kristy said, speaking for herself and Brian.
“Why, Katie? Scared?” asked Amy from her position on the couch next to Clint.
“No!” Katie said indignantly as she shifted her position on the loveseat next to Bob.
“Shut-up, it’s starting,” announced Brian. Amy and Katie closed their mouths, and began watching the movie. About halfway through the movie, Amy asked Kristy to pause it.
“Why?” Kristy asked as she paused it.
“I have to go to the bathroom,” Amy answered.
“Thanks for sharing,” said Katie.
“Yep,” said Amy as she left the room. After she left, Clint jumped up and stood just inside the doorway.
“What’re you doing?” Bob asked his brother.
“I’m gonna scare her when she comes back,” Clint answered.
Katie laughed. “I do that to her all the time!” she exclaimed.
When Amy came back, Clint jumped out in front of her and yelled, “Boo!” Amy screamed and jumped back. Bob, Brian, Kristy, Katie and Clint started laughing. Amy leaned up against the doorframe and caught her breath as Clint went back to the couch and sat down.
“That wasn’t funny,” Amy said as she followed him back to the couch.
“Yeah, it was,” Katie said, and Clint just laughed. Brian pressed play on the VCR, and the movie started again. A few minutes later, Katie realized that she and Bob were sitting kind of close. And that their hands were incredibly close, almost touching. Katie moved her hand a little bit closer to Bob’s, close enough so that they did touch.
“Come on, hold my hand, hold my hand,” Katie thought to herself. When Bob failed to take her hand, she lifted it up, and ran her fingers through her hair. When she set it back down, she placed it even closer to his. Katie stroked his hand a couple of times, and tugged lightly at his fingers, hoping that he would get the idea that she wanted to hold hands. He did, and within a few minutes, their fingers were entwined.
“Yes!” Katie thought silently. She smiled to myself in the dark, then repositioned herself on the loveseat so that she was sitting slightly closer to Bob. A few minutes later, he let go of her hand.
“Dang it!” Katie thought. But what he did next surprised her. He slid his arm around her waist, and pulled her closer to him.
“Oh, my goodness,” she thought somewhat excitedly. After he pulled her closer to him, he took hold of her hand again. About ten minutes later, Bob suddenly leaned over, and kissed Katie on the cheek. She turned and looked at him, somewhat surprised.
“What was that for?” she whispered. He smiled and shrugged. She smiled back, then laid her head on his shoulder. She kept it there until the movie was over. When the movie was over, Brian turned on the lights, and they all stretched.
“That wasn’t really that scary,” Katie commented.
Amy shook her head. “It wasn’t,” she agreed. The six of them started talking about the movie. They had been talking for not even five minutes when Rhonda, Scott, and Michelle walked into the house. Rhonda poked her head into the den.
“Come on, we have to go take Bob and Clint back to the hotel,” she said.
“Okay,” Amy, Katie, Bob and Clint said. The four of them stood up and walked out to Rhonda’s car. On the way to the hotel, none of them said much. When they got to the hotel, Amy, who was sitting in the front seat, got out and shoved the seat forward so that Bob and Clint could get out.
“Thanks for the ride,” Clint said as he got out. He gave Katie an awkward hug, since they were sitting down, then got out of the car. Bob gave Katie a hug as well, and a quick kiss on the cheek. They both got out of the car, and Bob gave Amy a hug. Clint gave Amy a hug as well, and looked like he was going to kiss her on the cheek, but decided against it since her mom was sitting right there, and he didn’t know how she would react.
“Bye,” Bob and Clint said to Katie and Amy.
“Bye,” they answered back.
“We’ll call you tomorrow,” Bob added. Amy and Katie nodded, got back in the car, and then drove back to Scott and Michelle’s. When Katie and Amy got inside, they went straight into the guestroom, and shut the door.
“Okay, what is going on with you and Bob?” Amy blurted out. Katie squealed a little bit, and sat down on the bed. Amy followed suit.
“You really wanna know?” Katie asked.
“Yes.”
“Okay, then.”
“Clint,” Bob started when they got into their hotel room and shut the door.
“Huh?” asked Clint.
“You looked like you were gonna kiss Amy. Why didn’t you? Please enlighten me.”
“Because her mom was sitting right there, and I didn’t know how she would react if I kissed her daughter.”
“Didn’t know how she would react? Clint, she was fiddling with the radio! She never would have even seen you kiss her!”
“Yeah, I know, but still…”
“ Still, what?”
“He kissed you?!” Amy exclaimed.
Katie held up two of my fingers, smiling satisfyingly. “Twice,” she said.
“Twice?!”
“Yep. Once while watching the movie, and when he got out of the car.”
“Lucky.”
“Hey, Clint will kiss you again soon enough. Heck, he kissed you, like, thirty times already!”
“Eleven,” Amy corrected her.
“Who’s counting?”
“Me, obviously!” said Amy. They both burst into laughter.
“He looked like he was gonna kiss you when he got out of the car,” Katie offered.
“Right,” Amy said scornfully.
“He did!”
“You think they’ll ask us out?”
“I don’t know,” Katie replied after a brief pause.
“Still, what?” Bob asked again when Clint failed to answer him.
“Hold on, I’m trying to figure out how to word this,” Clint said. Bob sat, waiting for his brother’s answer. “It’s like, I wanted to kiss her. But, at the same time, I didn’t. I really wanted to, but I don’t feel like I should lead her on. You get what I’m saying?” asked Clint.
Bob nodded. “You like her, but after tomorrow, we have to leave, and they have to leave, and you don’t want to hurt her. So you don’t feel as if you should lead her on by kissing her, and then having to leave and probably never seeing her again.”
“And if I kissed her, and put the idea in her head that I liked her, I’d hurt her when we have to leave.”
“But you probably already put the idea in her head that you like her because you kissed her, like, twenty times today!” Bob pointed out.
“Eleven,” Clint corrected him.
“Whatever,” said Bob. “The point is that she already knows that you like her, so whether you kiss her again or not, she’s gonna be hurt when we have to leave.”
Clint nodded his head slowly. “Yeah.”
“Well, whether they ask us out or not, which I doubt that they will, we’d have to leave the day after tomorrow, so what’s the point?” asked Amy.
“I know. But they like us, at least I’m pretty sure they do,” said Katie. Amy laughed. “And we like them,” she continued, “but when are we ever gonna see each other after this?”
“Never,” said Amy.
“Exactly. So I’m just gonna kinda think of it as a short, but sweet, summer romance.”
“Yeah.”
After they were quiet for a minute, Katie said, “I wonder what we’ll do tomorrow?”
