'Voodoo People' was, another, ground-breaking Prodigy single. The song was very up-tempo, guitar influenced hard club song with tribalish drum loops. The song came into Prodigy's setlist in early 1994 and the original version was very similar to the album version. The single was released in August 1994 and it reached number 12 in the single chart. The video of the song was remarkable - filmed in St Lucia in the Caribbean, the video was exciting and it had an action movie spirit in it and it gained a heavy rotation on MTV. MTV even made a video of The Dust Brothers Remix of the song but they also edited the original video since they though it was too scary.

The song came around from Liam's frustration of the dance scene: "I'd lost the buzz so much that I just had to do something for myself, and not with a rave or club in my mind. I had to go out of my way, as much as I could, to make records that didn't have a keyboard sound, using more natural instruments. Isamplee a Nirvana track and basically I didn't think a lot of people would like it, but I did. Itought it almost had a 1970s vibe."

    Tracks

The single contained the original and edit versions of 'Voodoo People'. The guitar riff was sampled from Nirvana's 'Very Ape'. Liam didn't sample the riff directly from a record, the riff was played by Lance Riddler who a friend of Angie. Thankfully, no-one hassuedd Liam for sampling of wanted any credits for it (but we can't be sure does Courtney Love know about this). The male vocals were sampled from Gylan Kain's 'The Shalimar'. The song was remixed by, back then, up-and-comming producers the Dust Brothers who are nowadays better known as the Chemical Brothers. Their remix was out-standing, slower than the original version but filled with hip hop samples and it is the best remix of a Prodigy song in Liam's opinion. The Chem Bros sampled 'For Pete's Sake' performed by Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth on their Remix. Due to copyright issues, the remix title had to be changed for the US release from the Dust Brothers Remix to the Chemical Brothers Remix. Also one, as yet, unknown vocal sample was reversed, but still the Brothers' remix was so good that Liam made his own version of it in 1997 for Prodigy's live set. Haiti Island Remix was available on 12-inch single and it was more techno-based than the original version. 'Goa (The Heat The Energy Part 2)' was a remix version of the album song 'The Heat (The Energy)'. The song was recorded live in Liam's studio when he and Neil McLennan (who also worked on 'Voodoo People') jammed in the studio.

    Records

The single was released by XL-Recordings on CD (XLS 54 CD) and vinyl (XLT 54) and in theNetherlandss by PIAS as 2-trk cardsleeve single (825.0054.24). In Germany the single was released by Intercord (INT 827.913) and in Australia by Dance Pool (660829 2).

Prodigy's US record label Elektra dropped the band soon after the release of 'Music for The Jilted Generation'. The label found 'One Love' to be too extreme to be released at all and they released 'No Good (Start The Dance)' on promo twelves only. The single was released in the States by Canadian label Mute in 1995. The single contained 7 songs, including exclusive Secret Knowledge remix of 'Speedway (Theme From Fastlane)'. It was released by mute as CD (7007-2) and 12" (7007-0). There are also 12" promo copies (7007-1) as well.
