Cavalry Scouts perform reconnaissance using a combination of mounted and dismounted techniques. The cavalry  is a uniquely organized, trained, and equipped unit used to perform the crucial task of reconnaissance for other combined arms forces. The cavalry performs three types of reconnaissance--route, zone, area and these are the cavalryman's specialty.

The Cavalry Scouts' primary task is gathering information, Scouts do this by establishing observation post, conducting patrols, and performing reconnaissance in all security operations. They also conduct counter reconnaissance actions to counter enemy reconnaissance and surveillance efforts throughout the area of operations. The Cavalry Scout denies the enemy from gathering information about friendly units. The Cavalry unit is both active and passive and they perform combat actions to destroy or repel enemy reconnaissance elements.

The Cavalry  is used by the corps commander as a reconnaissance and security force; it is strong enough to engage in decisive combat to help achieve his overall goal of destroying the enemy's cohesion and will to fight. The Cavalry Regiment is a self-contained force around which the covering force is built. Further, it provides a force structure for use in the main battle area  for offensive and defensive operations.

The Cavalry  is also a self-contained combined arms organization composed of cavalry squadrons, an aviation squadron, a support squadron, and separate combat  support companies and batteries. The Regiment operates independently over a wide area and at extended distances from other units. The Cavalry is a  highly mobile, force capable of fighting the fully mechanized threat in the environmental states of war or conflict. The Cavalry may be rapidly deployed and to serve as the initial combat-capable maneuver force to any theater of operations by ground, air or sea lift.
