What's new040602 Even Ida can use our new (well we bought it second hand for half the price) Davey & Co windlass in galvanized steel. One good thing about it is that it is two speed: use the crank for fast rolling in of the chain and use the lever to break out the anchor. 040601 I won't use an ordinary log with a through hull. With todays GPS:es you get the speed over ground well enough. For the rare times when the distance through the water is needed I will use this used taffrail Walker log I picked up. 040502 A picture of the engine. 040501 Two pictures from installing the floors. Sorry about the quality of the pictures. They are taken with my mobile phone as the scanner isn't working. 031124 A year since the last update! Well some things has happened... Knees and inside glassing for example. The knees are laminated from mahogany. Some bubbles formed under the glass. Maybe because air evaporation from the wooden core. Even though the bubbles are on the inside of the hull, I cut them out and will be filling with glass or micro balloons. Otherwise moist from the wood can accumulate there and start bad things... Even though the wood is epoxy sealed? I don't know. Next thing to do are floors and bulkheads. 021120 Finally scanned some images to update the site. Pictures if the Kevlar in the water line. And a series of the thrilling turning of the hull. A lot more has happened since I updated the site last time. Among other things: A would be mast was felled, barked and is starting to dry. The inside of the hull has been faired and is ready for glassing. The sheer has been planed down to its final looks. 020506 Put on ice sheathing last week. Traditionally you used steel or copper plates for this.
Or just substituted oak for the planks a bit above and below the waterline. I used a one meter
wide layer of 170 g/sq m Kevlar. 020325 Put the glass on the outside of the hull this weekend. It took just one day! That is a good thing, as you want the epoxy to chemically bind the three layers together. I'll put up some pictures soon. 020302 The hull is ready for glassing. Put up some new pictures about fairing the hull. Allso, a picture of the scarf cutting jig. If the glass arrives in time we will glass the hull in a couple of weeks. 020209 After some time when the ice made it impossible to get to the building site some milder weather let us prime the hull with epoxy. Now we have finally ordered the glass weave for the sheathing of the hull. It will be three layers of 290 g/sq m plain weave on the outside. The same on the inside. According to my calculations the hull is about 84 sq m, including the deck, so it will be almost 150 kg of glass plus some extra for rudder etc. January 2002 Ice stopped us from getting to the boat. 011222 Fairing is done on the outside of the hull. No pictures yet, though. Some of the temporary fasteners I used was really hard getting out. With the hardest ones I had to cut it with a small angle-grinder tool (small like a coin) and then screw it out. Next step will be priming with epoxy and glassing. Some cracks in the hull due to very dry air in the winter will also have to be repaired. With some I'll just fill it up with epoxy, and with some I might have to route out a bit of the wood and put in a new piece. 010925 Finally put up some pictures of the boat with all she strips in place. Now we're plugging the holes after the temporary screws and started fairing. More on that later. 010903 Finished planking! After eight months it is finally over. I'll put up some pictures soon. Until then, you can look at the pictures of another junk rigged boat, Fenix, that we met in Scotland last summer. 010816 I promised myself that I wouldn't put up any other pictures until the planking was finished. (Any day now...) But then Ida came out to inspect the boat: 010618 The planking goes on and on. Put up planking page 2. 010609 The planking continues, some more pictures added
on the stem and cracked transom. The pace have been a bit slower lately, because
we got a new crew member one month ago. 010222 Added some pictures from last years sailing in Scotland. 010221 Added some more pictures to the page about the molds. 010213 Before I started I really wanted to find the best books. I bought more than I needed. On an new page I list the books that really helped me. 010212 After some days of -20 C the ice makes it impossible to go to the island where we build the boat, as we go there with a small skiff. Instead I updated the site with some old lofting pictures. |
