We’ll Always have Saturday Mornings

Remember the early 90s? When Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Ren & Stimpy ruled, when if you came into school on Monday unable to discuss the previous night’s episode of the Simpsons, you were living under a rock? When "Don’t have a cow, man," and "Aye Caramba!" were as much a part of your daily speech as the word "not" was used to convey sarcasm. Ah, those were the days, huh? The Age of the Simpsons.
But why have cartoons stopped being the pop culture phenomena they once were, in favor of Friends and Party of Five? When you hold a discussion in class, who studiously quotes The Simpsons, or Dr. Katz or South Park? Generally speaking, educated "dorks". (Note: this is in no way meant to be construed as a negative comment. I count myself among this group.)
Why don’t your average TV watchers ever use these cartoons as a source of inspiration? Maybe it’s because there is some fairly high level humor in there that they can’t pick up on. Not to demean anyone, but what’s easier to comprehend: A Planet of the Apes musical, or jokes about nerds in Step By Step? Give me my adult-oriented Comedy Central cartoons any day, man!
