Return of Saturn
The new No Doubt album will be released in April of 2000 and will be titled "Return of Saturn." The first single is called "Simple Kind of Life." & should be released in January.
Magic in the Makeup
Five months into writing their fourth album, No Doubt have completed 20 songs and have a tentative title: Magic's in the Makeup.
"That's what I'm leaning toward right now," said singer Gwen Stefani, adding that it's also the title of her favorite new track. Others potentially slotted for the follow-up to the 13-million-selling Tragic Kingdom album include Dark Blue, New
and I Think I'm Pregnant.
"Only kidding about that last one," Stefani said, noting that she and boyfriend Gavin Rossdale of Bush don't have any foreseeable announcements to make. "There was a song called that but it
changed."
Speaking at the ASCAP Pop Music Awards Monday night -- where No Doubt scooped up most-performed-song nods for "Don't Speak"
and "Spiderwebs" -- Stefani said her band still has half the writing process ahead of it. "I'm hoping to write another 20 songs," the singer said, and she described the material summoned so far as having "a really cool vibe."
The Anaheim, Calif. quintet has been quietly working in a rented house on Mulholland Drive in the Hollywood Hills. "It's got a beautiful view," said Stefani. "Tony (bassist Kanal) is the only
one that's living there, but we come every day and work on songs." The new album is due late this year or early next.
In other No Doubt news, the band will reportedly cover "Hateful" for an upcoming tribute to punk pioneers the Clash, due August 25. In addition, the band's recording of a song called "I Throw
My Toys Around," written and produced by Elvis Costello, will appear on the soundtrack to the Rugrats movie, due out on Interscope by year's end. And on the Brian Setzer Orchestra's next album, Dirty Boogie, Stefani duets with the former Stray Cat on "You're the Ann-Margret for Viva Las Vegas but edited out. Look for that one June 30. Trent Reznor, Jewel, Berry Gordy Take Home ASCAP Pop Music Awards
Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor, Jewel, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and No Doubt were among the artists honored at the 15th annual ASCAP Pop Music Awards, held Monday (May 18) night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.
The night's most special honors, though, went to legendary Motown founder Berry Gordy, who received ASCAP's first American Legend Award, and to the recently passed Frank Sinatra, who received a special tribute.
The big winners included songwriter Diane Warren ("Unbreak My Heart," performed by Toni Braxton, "How Do I Live," by LeAnn Rimes, "For You I Will?," by Monica, and "Because You Loved Me," by Celine Dion), who took home the Songwriter of the Year honors as well as Song of the Year for "Unbreak My Heart."
Other winners included the Verve Pipe's Brian Vander Ark, who performed "The Freshman" acoustically, Tracy Chapman, Shawn Colvin, Glen Ballard, Hanson, the Spice Girls, John Mellencamp, Bryan Adams, Steve Miller, Dave Matthews, and many others. The awards were given to the writers and publishers of the most performed songs from Oct. 1, 1996 through Sept. 20, 1997.

No Doubt To Join Korn, Ice Cube, Rancid On Clash Tribute
No Doubt will enter a recording studio next week to pound
out a version the Clash's "Hateful" for an upcoming benefit
tribute album to the punk pioneers.
The band joins the Indigo Girls, Korn, MXPX, Cracker, the
Urge, Face To Face, Unwritten Law, and Ranking Roger of
English Beat/General Public fame as the latest artist to sign on
for the tribute. They will join previously announced acts Ice
Cube & Mack 10, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, 311,
Rancid, silverchair, and Moby. Jason Rothberg, Joe Strummer's manager and the man
assembling the album, said that Third Eye Blind, Everclear,
and the Deftones are also expected to contribute tracks, but
that their involvement has not been confirmed yet.
It's been a long road for the album, which currently carries the
utilitarian title "Tribute" and will benefit the High Risk Youth
Program at Children Hospital Los Angeles.
We first reported on the album exactly one year ago
since then a number of artists originally attached to the project
have had to bow out for various reasons.
The artists who do appear serve as a testament to the
flexibility of the Clash's music. In addition to the
straightforward ska-punk renderings by the Bosstones,
Rancid, and MXPX (with help from Social Distortion's Mike
Ness), the album boasts a folky acoustic version of
"Clampdown" courtesy of the Indigo Girls, a country take on
"White Riot" by Cracker, and a lilting ambient rendition of
"Straight To Hell" from Moby and Heather Nova. The album
will also feature a you-have-to-hear-it-to-believe-it version of
"Should I Stay Or Should I Go" featuring Ice Cube, Mack 10
and Korn as remixed by Danny Saber.
"This album is gonna take everybody on a ride," Rothberg said.
"My first ever musical performance was in a junior high talent
show doing covers of (the Clash's) 'Protex Blue' and 'Police
and Thieves,'" 311's Nick Hexum said in a commentary that
will be included in the album's liner notes. "My band was extra
hip because we were doing a song ('Protex Blue') that was
only available on the import version of the Clash's debut album
and was also about a type of condom. After our performance,
we went into an unplanned 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go?'
stage and unplug our musical instruments, leaving only the
drums going. It was hilarious."
The Bosstones' Tim Burton told of a similar deep-seeded
affinity for the Clash in explaining his band's involvement in the project. "The familiar horn intro to 'Rudie Can't Fail' blurted through the speakers, and we all went, 'Yeah!," Burton said. this day when somebody asks me what it was like in our early days when nobody was mixing ska and punk, I think back to
the band that did it first and best."
Meanwhile, the original members of the Clash are currently
putting together an album of live material culled from the
band's heyday that it hopes to release later this year. Rothberg
said that all four members of the group are involved in
selecting the songs for the live album, which is being organized
by Trish Simonon, the wife of Clash bassist Paul Simonon.
While the track listing for that live album is far from complete,
the tribute album is shaping up nicely. When "Tribute" arrives
on August 25, here's what you'll find:
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones (produced by X's John Doe) - "Rudie
Can't Fail"
MXPX (w/Social Distortion's Mike Ness) - "Janie Jones"
Ranking Roger - "Rock The Casbah"
Ice Cube, Mack 10, and Korn (remixed by Danny Saber) -
"Should I Stay Or Should I Go"
No Doubt - "Hateful"
The Urge - "This Is Radio Clash"
311 - "White Man In Hammersmith Palais"
Rancid - "Cheat"
silverchair - "London's Burning"
Cracker - "White Riot"
Indigo Girls - "Clampdown"
Face To Face - "Tommy Gun"
Unwritten Law - "The Guns of Brixton"
Moby and Heather Nova - "Straight To Hell"
Viva Gwen Stefani
It's a match made in heaven ... or at least Hollywood. Last Friday, super-hip rockabilly-turned-swing guitarist Brian Setzer
entered a Los Angeles studio to duet with No Doubt super diva Gwen Stefani on a cover of the Elvis Presley/Ann-Margret song "You're the Boss." The song was originally performed by the
on-and-off-screen couple in the 1964 film Viva Las Vegas.
The new version of the ditty, which Setzer manager Dave Kaplan says is "very big bandy sounding," will appear on the forthcoming Brian Setzer Orchestra album The Dirty Boogie, due out June 16. The song marks the first time a female voice has appeared on any Setzer song since the band originated five years ago.
No Doubt is currently in the midst of writing and rehearsing new material and should be in the studio this summer, according to a No Doubt management source. Setzer and his 17-piece big band will embark on a 40-city tour this summer. Blair R. Fischer for Rolling Stone Network)
Gwendolyn Goes Hollywood
No Doubt diva Gwen Stefani plans to follow in Courtney Love's spiked and jeweled footprints soon. Stefani's platinum tresses and bare midriff have caused a stir in Hollywood, where numerous film companies and directors are battling for the singer's first film contract. "For someone who has never acted before, Gwen is getting an astounding number of offers," said publicist David Schiff. "A lot of people see something special in her." Reports published in March said Stefani was considering a role in Belly, an upcoming movie by Hype Williams, who directed videos for Missy Elliot, Will Smith and R. Kelly. Williams reportedly created the character "Buddha" with Stefani in mind, but she remains "unattached" to the film and has not read the script, Schiff said. Stefani's top priority remains No Doubt and their upcoming album. The band has rented a house in the hills above Los Angeles and has written 11 songs there, but is currently taking a break while Stefani vacations with beau Gavin Rossdale of Bush in Ireland. No Doubt will tentatively release the album in late December.
ND's Tony Kanal Discusses Next Album
The members of No Doubt are currently in Los Angeles in the early stages of making their fourth album. In an exclusive interview on
Wednesday (March 18) with allstar, bassist Tony Kanal said the band is ready to put their mega-selling three-year-old album
behind them. "I would say the Grammy Awards was the final chapter in Tragic Kingdom,"he said on the phone from his new house, where the band has been demoing new material. "The only reason we were even nominated was because 'Don't Speak' came out somehow in the voting period. But it was a trip to New York, so I can't
complain."
Despite the incredible experiences of the last couple years, Kanal says they're approaching their next album as they have the previous three(their 1992 self-titled debut, the independently released Beacon Street Incident, and 1995's Tragic Kingdom).
"We took a few months off, and now we're right back to songwriting again,” says Kanal. “So we're kind of in the same situation, where we're just working. We're doing everything
in our power not to approach this album in any particular way. We're just trying to write good songs."
As for the direction of the new material, Kanal could only say that most of the new songs were in their very earliest stages. "We have about 14 ideas, which is a good start because we've only been doing this for about a month now. Some of those
ideas had come from writing on tour the last couple years, and now we finally get to attack them again. There's so much stuff we want to try."
Similar to Tragic Kingdom, most of the new lyrics are being written by singer Gwen Stefani, which is just fine with Kanal. "For us now, where we're at with this whole thing, I feel a lot more comfortable with Gwen writing the majority of the lyrics. I
don't feel like I can write lyrics and have her sing them."
He continues, "I think one of the big reasons Tragic Kingdom worked is because Gwen wrote lyrics that were very sincere, and were coming from her heart, and many people made the connection. She's been brainstorming at practice and they're coming right out."
No Doubt will get a chance to try out some new songs when they play a pair of concerts in Hawaii on May 1 and 2, one with their heroes Madness. Not counting a one-off Christmas performance in L.A., they'll be the band's first shows since October. "We've been waiting for Madness to reunite and go out and tour, and it so happens that they're going out in
April and May. It's bad timing for us because we'll be working on the new album, but we're doing it for the sake of playing with Madness. And we hadn't done a final show in Hawaii for the last record, so it just made sense. It's also a little break from
our songwriting."
Kanal also said the band has been inundated with soundtracks and other project offers lately, but has yet to commit to anything, although he did say one or two things are in the works.

Gwen Stefani May Show Up In "Belly"
MTV News Online
No Doubt's Gwen Stefani, now famous for singing "Don't Speak," maybe be required to speak soon. The platinmum-haired frontwoman is in negotiations to act in "Belly," the feature film debut from busy video
director Hype Williams, who has directed clips for Missy Elliot, Will Smith, and R. Kelly.
Stefani may play a character named "Buddha," a role which Williams wrote with Gwen in mind. In fact, all of the roles were created for the artists that have so far been cast. Up and coming rapper, DMX, who is featured on LL Cool J's single "4,3,2,1" is going to play the lead. R&B singer Taral Hicks will play his love interest. The film, about four guys in New York and their adventures, will also feature stars, Nas,
Method Man, and TLC's T-Boz.
Filming for "Belly" is set to begin in a few weeks and should be out by the end of this year."
