No Doubt started back in 1986 featuring Gwen
Stefani and John Spence on vocals along with
Gwen's brother Eric on keyboards. The band
played their first party on New Years Eve in
that now infamous rock and roll breeding
ground Orange County, California.
In the audience
that night was a
friend of the
drummer, a
bass player
named Tony
Kanal.
Impressed with
the show a week
later Tony became the No Doubt bass player and shortly
there after the band played their first gig
in Long Beach,California.
Performing dual duties as both
high schoolers and rock and
rollers the band had almost
made it through their first year
but then tragedy struck in
1987. John Spence took his
own life just a few days before
Christmas. Making a difficult
decision for such a young band
they moved on as horn player
Alan Meade joined Gwen and
became responsible for half
the vocal duties. Alan chose to
relinquish his position in the
band leaving Gwen as sole
proprietor.
The revolving membership continued until
guitarist Tom Dumont joined the ranks in
1988 and was finally completed in 89 with the
addition of Adrian Young on drums. Adrian
actually learned to play drums along with
their demo. He had not been a drummer
before. With Adrian on board the band not
only took on his influences but his personality
as well.
When it came time to record the follow up to
their 1992 debut the band had come to a
crossroad. Sales from the first album hadn't
quite lived up to expectations and support from
the record label was focussed elsewhere. So
they did what any self respecting band would
that they wanted to record an album for no
money. For two years straight whenever they
could get a studio they'd go in for a night and
record for free.
Just as things were getting on track again
another obstacle popped up. Eric was tired of
the ups and downs of the music business and
decided to leave in order to pursue his day job
as an animator on The Simpsons in December
1994. At that point the band had so many songs
they decided to release their own independent
record in January of 95 called The Beacon
Street Collection. Out of the remaining songs
came Tragic Kingdom, the bands break through
album. With the success of Tragic Kingdom
the band will begin work on their forth album
after their US tour.
