Pantera
is one of the greatest metal band in existence. Formed in the late
80's as a glam rock band they have progressed beyond the bonds of conventional
metal. Their era as a glam band has long passed into the shadows
of a much great force. It is a past we should all forget, and one
that many are not even aware of. They are now, and will always be,
pure heavy metal. But with so many "critics" telling us that metal
is dead, and with too many people listening, Pantera continued forth.
They decided to prove this by releasing their heaviest album to date, The
Great Southern Trendkill.
Now,
with the recent release of Live 101 and the Pantera 3 video, they continue
to reign as the kings of the heaviest of the heavy. Finally, after
eight years since their debut album Cowboys From Hell, Pantera is starting
to get the recognition they deserve. Dimebag was voted Best Heavy Metal Guitarist in Guitar World Magazine, and Best Rock Guitarist in Guitar Magazine. 3:Watch It Go was also voted best video in Metal Edge. Pantera rulz, spread the word.
I
have also had the great honor to see the band live twice. My first
Pantera show was January 19, 1997 at the Roseland in New York City.
Phil was obviously trashed, but what else is new. Dimebag could do
no wrong, the master of the six shooter hit the bulls eye every time.
Rex's bass growled with the menacing ferocity we have come to love.
And Vinnie Paul was amazing, playing with such precision and speed that
challenges master Lars Ulrich. Over all, a perfect show.
That
was not the end either, it still gets better(for me at least). My
friends and I decided to see if we could meet the band. So we went
into the city early to wait behind the place to see if we could get some
stuff signed when the band came. We waited from about 2:00 in the
afternoon untill around 8:00 that night, but we never got to meet them.
We decided that we would go in and try again after the show. After
about a half hour of waiting a roodie that remembered us from before the
show let me and one other friend in. The other two got in later by
getting passes from people coming out. It was one of the greatest
expieriences of my life. I got to talk with the band for over an
hour and I got a lot of stuff signed. I even have a picture of my
friend Curt and I with Phil. I'll put pics up later.
It
was something I will never forget. I talked with Phil about the Church
of Satan, a friend of his is a member. If any of you have never met
Phil, he is much taller than he appears in pics and on stage. My
idol, Dimebag, put me in a head lock, but my friend screwed up that picture.
And Big Vall, what else can I say but that he is HUGE!!!
Thanks
for actualy reading all of this. And if you didn't, whatever. Now
on to the cool stuff.
