Ministry began when Cuban born Al (Alain, Alien) Jourgensen submitted the "Cold
Life" single ,(Wax-003), to Wax Trax! records!
This being back when young clean-cut, new wave Al moved from Colorado to Chicago! The
group is named after the B-movie "Ministry of Fear !" After Ministry's signing
to Arista records in 1982, Al continued to record for WaxTrax! under several pseudonyms
both as an artist and producer. Al's first extra-curricular production for WaxTrax!
occurred when he was united with the Seattle-based outfit, the Blackouts. most
notably, this project united Al with Blackout members Paul and Roland Barker, and Bill
Rieflin. Both Paul and Bill would ultimately become core members of the Ministry
compound. After the brief relationship with Arista, Ministry returned to WaxTrax! with a
vengeance to record the cla$$ic "Everyday (is Halloween)" backed with the
equally bouncy "All Day."
Here's where things get interesting. Front 242 front-man Richard 23 and fellow Belgian
"Mega-star" (his occupation as listed on his pa$$port) Luc Van Acker teamed up
with Al to form the Revolting Cocks and record their influential Big Sexy Land album. The
record's name is taken from a very popular chain of German porno houses. The first
Revolting Cocks release was "No Devotion" b/w "Attack Ships on Fire"
(Wax-011). The Revco name was spawned, like many of WaxTrax!'s projects, from an all-night
drinking and substance-abuse session at the label office. The Cock's visual image, as it
is still known today, comes from a photo of Dannie Flesher's (Co-founder of
WaxTrax!)father and two uncles taken from the family archives. Through countless Cock
mutations, those Arkansas hillbillies have remained as their identities. YeeHaw!
"Drop your drawers boy, now squeal like a pig."
After the ground breaking album Psalm 69, they were part of the second Lollapalooza where they smote every other band with their bone crunching force. Of course, after that things kind of went a little awry. With the slower paced Filth Pig, and the outright poorly produced Dark Side of the Spoon. One of the things that really kept me interested in their work was a few cuts from Pig and one cut from Spoon. That and the release of the third Lard cd Pure Chewing Satisfaction. There is nothing better than the chorus/bridge from songs like Mangoat. Creme Corn What?
