The Birth of LOVE SPIT LOVE

In 1991 the Psychedelic Furs released the l.p."World Outside" and promptly went on tour with American band Pale Devine as support. This is when the two Richard's - Butler and Fortus - met for the first time and immediately struck up a friendship and found that they both shared the same way of thinking. As the tour progressed Richard Butler felt that the Psychedelic Furs had been taken as far as they could go and something challenging was required......Likewise Richard Fortus also began to have reservations about his own band. And so the seeds were sown for the creation of Love Spit Love...

A Short History of Love Spit Love

In 1991, Richard Butler freed himself of the constraints of being in an established band - preset expectations and predicatability - and set about a new platform for his singular musical and lyrical vision.

With Love Spit Love, the name for both his new group and their debut album, Butler has fashioned an inspired unit that takes him far from the restraints of the Furs and into the forefront of contemporary music for the 90's.

The first recruit to Love Spit LOve was guitarist Richard Fortus, who had impressed butler when opening for the Furs with his former band, Pale Devine, on the Furs final U.S. tour. Says Butler, "I got to know Richard over the course of the tour and I had this feeling that a combination of my voice and sense of melody and his versatility and musical strength would be really interesting. When I made the decision to start a new band, he was the first person I called."

By the time New York based Frank Ferrer, a drummer with a rare combination of technical excellance, passion and attitude, had been recruited, Butler and Fortus were brimming with songs and fresh ideas and ready to go into the studio. To avoid holding up the start of the new album, richard persuaded his brother, Tim, who had been helping out during the initial rehearsals of the new material, to travel to Los Angeles and fill in on bass for the duration of the sessions.

The four met up at Eldorado Studios in January with producer Dave Jerden who was a big fan of Butler's previous work and relished the idea of updating the sound for Love Spit Love. For his part, Butler admired not only Jerden's recent productions for Alice in Chains and Jane's Addiction, but also his earlier work with Brian Eno, David Byrne and Talking Heads.
