Richard Butler in Quotes.....

On the Psychedelic Furs : "I thought that The Furs were a great band for their time, but i wanted to work with new people to create a new sound and get the spark of surprise back into my songwriting. With The Furs, it got to the stage that I would know how a record was going to sound before we started it."

On the Recording Process : "When you make a record, you walk the line between keeping the feel of the band and filling out the sound in an imaginatie way. In other words, you have to know when a basic track has a good feel and when to stop pissing around with it."

On Touring : "Touring is, by turns, exciting, frustrating, draining, inspiring, wearing, lonely and ultimatley the acid test for a band's music."

The Artwork : "I've always had a hand in the artwork for all my music. I guess it's because I don't trust anyone else enough. The image on the Love Spit Love cover is a filing cabinet from Ellis Island, which was a landing place for immigrants early this centuary."

On Guitarist Richard Fortus : "It happened that at the same time I was leaving The Furs, Richard was having second thoughts about his own band Pale Devine. I liked him as a person and I liked the feel of his guitar playing, so we started writing together and it worked. The rest, as they say, is 'la-di-da'."

On Producer Dave Jerden : "More important than the records Dave had made was his feel for what we were doing, where we wanted to take the record, and the general sound of the music. He has great ears - not a typical industry man, more of a music man!"
