Lesson III
Chord Progressions, Primary Dominant 7th Chords(Part 1), & Tuning Your Guitar
Chord Progressions
At the end of
Lesson 2,
I showed you some chord strums that you could play with the major and minor chords that you
have been learning. Chord progressions take the chord strums to the next
level of playing. Click on the icon below to go to the chord progressions page.
Primary Dominant 7th Chords(Part 1)
At this point you might not want to learn any more chords. After all, you've learned all of the major and minor chords, isn't that enough? Well the dominant 7th chords are just as important as the major and minor chords and should be
part of every guitarists chord arsenal. What I tell my students at this point is that I am not looking for them to learn all of the 7th chords by the next lesson, just half. This gives them a little more time to work on the progressions and gives them a
small break from learning more chords. The dominant 7th chords I have them learn for lesson 3 are: A 7th, B 7th, D 7th, & E 7th. The chord progressions that I will give them for lesson 4, use these 4 dominant 7th chords. Click on the link below to find these 4 dominant 7th chords.
Tuning The Guitar
By now the guitarist is starting to know how the guitar and the chords should sound. If the guitar does not sound right, the guitarist needs to know how to fix or tune it. Usually on the first lesson, I recommend that they invest in an electronic tuner. These are pretty inexpensive for the amount of use you will get out of it. When I first started playing in 1985 I bought a tuner for about $25. I still have this tuner and use it all the time. There are other ways to tune a guitar when a tuner is not available. Below is a good source for tuning a guitar online.
