In this world
We are so far gone
It doesn't matter
What we're running from
He's just a liar
And she's a watch dog
She'll run in the rain
With her socks on
And simple wisdom
Is falling asleep in the summer time
In the basement on the floor boards
With nothing on your mind
And watch the world revolve around you
And watch the world revolve without you
And all your longing for the olden days
Leaves your memories circling the drain
Still standing
Stuck in photographs
But your friends all told you
You can't romance the past
And he is energy
And she is half asleep
And love is the message
he leaves on her machine
But the more the world revolves around you
The more the world revolves without you
Lead tainted water dripping day by day
Unquestioned answers circling the drain
So underwater
It only comes out when you
cry for hours
Does it get better?
Shouldn't i be asking you?
Let's tell each other
But the more the world revolves around you
The more the world revolves without you
And if you leave her, she'll go away
and leave her memory circling the drain
Circling the drain
(circling)
Circling the drain
(the drain)
Circling the drain
(circling)
Circling the drain
(the drain)
HISTORY: While hanging out with Adam in his room, he introduced me to a song he'd been writing. He'd gotten as far as the first verse, but he hadn't finished writing lines for the rest of the song. I then suggested a line I had used in some of my poetry: "The more the world revolves around you, the more the world revolves without you." And from that line, came the chorus to Adam's song.
I then assisted him with the rest of the words, providing the lines "stuck in photographs" and "unquestioned answers", and helping with the refrain. We also spent much time together working out harmony vocals for the chorus.
This composition is notable because it gave me one of those rare chances to co-write a more serious song with Adam. Also, this was more of a collaboration than "Spending Time With You", for which I merely threw in lyrics to complement ones he'd already written earlier in the song.
"Circling the Drain" has been recorded in solo demo form by Adam, and is slated to appear on a bonus disc with his 2001 CD, "Last Impressions".
