TRICKY Info

Adrian Thaws was born and raised in England. He spent a lot of his childhood dealing with rascism. England is known for being a racist country. I suppose that may be why he cam to america. Who knows?

Tricky is now a 33 year old father of one daughter, living in New York. He has managed to make his way up the success chart dramatically. Famous or not Tricky has a unique format in doing music. Mainstream views him as a sort of evil. What's the truthe? He's a caring soft spoken person. Tricky has his own explanation for this though: "I've never liked smiling for people, and that and the press has made me into the devil. But I think it's probaly because I'm scared. It's the fear in me." So I guess that explains the motivation in his music. Whatever the motivation Tricky has certainly created some really pretty, intense, unique, and somewhat haunting music for the world to enjoy.

Naturally, Tricky had to start somewheres. His first band was called WILD BUNCH, which later was changed to MASSIVE ATTACK. He did one album with Massive Attack called "Blue Lines". After which, in 1992, he released his single debut album called "Aftermath". During his work doing music solo, he met up with a girl named Martina. Since, Martina has had some contribution to his music. Combining his voice with her voice creates a almost euphoric soothing feeling. They work with each other not for each other and the outcome has been great.

Tricky continued releasing solo albums (other star sweeped musicians joined in) until he recorded his second album with Massive Attack called Protection.

Tricky released his first real album by himself in 1995 called Maxinquaye. It hit the charts dramatically and caused a big introduction to the world of him and his music. This album has become a haven for some and release for many. He has gone on to work with many musician such as Bjork (whom he dated), Terry Hall, Neneh Cherry, Portishead, and many more.

Tricky's personal life, while seeming dark, is not so dark as the press would like to believe. He has a daughter, who is mothered by Martina. Tricky's issues with racism have continued throughout his adulthood. Both in England and USA he has had major issues about it. "I take my daughter to a park in England. Where I live is a white area and some of the mothers of the other children won't let their children go near my child. That really hurts me. So I've dealt with racism, it aint' nothing new."

There's been many issues with "concerned parents" who feel like Tricky's music isn't apporpriate for young kids. Which was hard to understand. Most of Tricky's music comes packaged in a decent and respectful manner. So why would the press point "bad guy" fingers at Tricky? "It's tension. I can understand why you don't want your kids listening to tension. At seven you don't need to be tense. At seven everything's cool and fun. Once your in your 20's everything changes and I suppose you can wait for that. People say I'm scary and I'm not. Perhaps it's because I'm scared and so the music is scary." Understandable explanation although even teenagers deal with emotion.

Tricky has by far proved to be a remarkable musician. Whatever it is that has motivated him all the way to NEARLY GOD (an album in case your wondering) deserves some credit. Whether it be good or bad.
