Camden, NJ August 25th, 1999. 7 P.M.
My friend and I arrived about 45 minutes early to get shirts
and look around for the tour buses. No one was around, but
that was ok. The show started at 7:30, so we got in our
seats around 7. Our seats were absolutely fab- 13th row,
left, where John played all night! Fastball opened right
after 7:30 and played for 30 mins. They were alright, but
their sound wasn't very good. You could tell that they were
not the band people were there for! After a short break,
Sugar Ray came on strong. He really got the crowd going when
he performed Someday and Every Morning. He kept coming over
to our side on this platform, so I got excited, hoping
John would follow his example!
Finally, after Sugar Ray and a 15 minute break, the Goos
came on, playing "Dizzy" strong and loud. The crowd went
crazy! So did my friend and I--we were singing along and
jumping around. Everyone was so into them, it was great.
They got much more of a response then the other groups.
About halfway through the set, John got a bright pink
feather boa from a girl in the audience and played wore
it all through "Slide"...I'm not sure if she got it back,
though!
The best songs of the night were "Name", although John
didn't tell the story of it, and "Acoustic #3", which he
introduced as "the song without a name. I couldn't think
of one, so, oh well."
One amazing part of the night was during one of the last
songs. A bunch of people in front of us left (I don't know why),
so my friend Katie and I were out in the open. So, John came
over to our side (as he did throughout the whole show!!) for
one of the songs. My friend and I were singing really loudly
and waving to him, hoping he'd see us. Well--he looked over
at us and pointed us out to Robby. Then he took his guitar
and pointed at us when he hit the next big chord. It was
awesome- the people down the aisle from us gave us a big
grin! He made our night! (Actually, my year!!) All throughout
the set, John kept making jokes and really playing up to the
audience. He is a wonderful performer. He told some jokes and
gave advice to college girls on how to succeed while away at
school: "Don't get DRUNK!" The crowd loved it. The best part
was a joke he told near the end of the show. Some people in
the front were getting wild, so he stopped singing right in
the middle of "Iris" to talk to them. He's like, "Man, I'm
singing! Why the hostility?" He was so nice about it. He
announced that he was going to tell a joke to "relieve the
tension".This got him huge laughs, it was hysterical!
This was my first Goo concert and it won't be my last. John
has me totally hooked--on both their music and his body! All
in all, this night could only have been better if I had
really met them--but I haven't given up yet!
If you have been lucky enough to see the Goos in person and
would like to add a review to my site (please! LOL), just
email me and I will post it as soon as possible. Thanks!
