Let me tell you a little story about how I first heard about Fastball. It was May 1, 1997, they were opening up for Matthew Sweet for his Blue Sky on Mars tour. I had gotten my tickets weeks in advance and didn't even know who the opening bands were until a few days before the show. Which didn't really make a difference as I had only heard one recent song from Sloan and had never heard of Fastball.

Matthew Sweet So Thursday night rolls around, and me and my friend Robert start heading out to the beautiful shores of Solana Beach. The Belly Up Tavern is walking distance from the beach, on South Cedros Blvd. in case anyone lives in San Diego. Well I'm pretty darn excited. Hadn't been to a concert in ages and ages, and I rather looked forward to it. We had arrived early, parking in the Tavern's parking lot and headed for the nearby Subway. On the way there we see this rickety old van with Texas license plates pull up in front of the Tavern. Robert says to me, they must be in the band. I of course disagreed, lol, because they hardly looked like musicians.

The Belly Up Tavern So around 6:30 we start heading back and sat down at the best seats, I think, there were. We were right near the stage at bar stools and a little table, where we could see the stage perfectly. And around 7:00, the same 3 guys we'd seen pull up in that van started jammin on stage. LOL You could imagine my surprise. Well they rocked, the music was absolutely groovy, but no one was dancing or anything, because it's still early in the evening. After a bit into their set, Miles candidly stated, you know you guys can come up and dance. Nonetheless they ended their set with a huge applause. I really liked it.

The next band was Sloan, a more well known band, but I didn't really like it. I just remember it being really loud. But people were bouncing around in front of the stage, mostly because Matthew Sweet was about to come on.

Suffice it to say, the concert was a great success. And I being a fan waited around a bit, hoping for maybe an autograph or a hello. When that obviously wasn't going to happen, Robert and I headed out towards the beach to waste some time, and went back, maybe he'd be leaving around now and we could catch him on the way out. So us and a small crowd started gathering in the parking lot near the bus. But this police officer got a little huffy saying we weren't supposed to be there. So we pouted and started heading for the car. Well whadya know, who do you think we ran into on the way? The same 3 guys. Robert says hey you guys were rockin, and I agreed, my words were "awesome". Heheheh. So we started talking to them a bit, I didn't have a pen or a piece of paper but I really wanted an autograph, a momento of the evening. So one of the guys pulled out a sticker and signed it for me. The guys are not only awesome on stage, but they are off as well. Hehehe, I said something idiotic to Miles, he had on this really neat shirt, hard to make out the design but I liked it. Anyway, that's how I first heard of them. Now they have a new album and a new song playing on the radio and I began surfing the web to see if they had any websites out there. (gasp!) Disbelief! They don't. So here's my little homage to the guys for being totally awesome enough to talk to me that night.
