Gary and Jack formed a band called "Big Talk" they played gigs for £40 a night and fruit pick then surf during the day they were "as happy as pigs in shit" as gary said. Meanwhile they met anouther glastonbury band called "No Smoke" featuring the now Kula Shaker drummer Paul Winterhart, they asked gary to replace their singer who had got into Hare Krishna, Gary told them that he wouldn't leave Big Talk without Jack as they were best mates, so they both joined and formed "Chief" but it only lasted a few months because the guitarest was too Aerosmith for them. They both went traveling and when they came back to england Jack had started on a music course at West London Institute, there he met Kenywn and Dom . None of them finished the course, forming "Naked" with Gary. There first ever demo tape "The Purple Tape", got them noticed and signed to Sony 2 in london 1994. They moved into a house in Isleworth, west London. Sony wanted them to change their name so they became "Reef". Success was quick and they went from playing pubs, to three nights at the Royal Albert Hall helped by the "Mod Father" Paul Weller, who had heard a promo of their first release Good Feeling and he treated them like kings.
