Although I witnessed it from the very rear of the Hersheypark Arena,
I must say that Fuel totally rocked the house. So much, in fact, that I
feel (as I felt even before the show) Fuel should've headlined and closed
out the show, not the Bloodhound Gang (no offense meant to the latter band,
who also put on an entertaining show). Frontman Brett Scallions' stage
presence is really incredible. He's definitely a born performer and his
voice is as powerful as any other instrument on stage. The band kicked
off the show on a proper note, with "Mary Pretends", a loud song that has
been getting a good deal of airplay recently. They rolled on from there
mixing in a few new songs with stuff off of their "Porcelain" album (which
I strongly recommend to anyone who likes 'alternative' music. The big finish
came with "Ozone Baby", the song that I really came to hear. Just before
they began the opening riffs, Brett invited five Elvis impersonators all
decked out in the classic Elvis garb, with Christmas lights strung about
them. They danced around on stage with Brett and it was a totally awesome
scene, if not just for the utter surprise of it. It exposed a side of the
band I hadn't seen or expected--and I mean this in the nicest way--and
that is their total genius as performers. And as today is July 5th, and
I'm fresh from the slightly underattended Bush concert at Hersheypark Stadium,
I can't help but think that Gavin and Co. would've done better to let Fuel
open the show in front of an obviously hometown crowd, instead of opting
for their Trauma/Interscope pals Souls. But as it stands, I'm still on
the lookout for my next opportunity to see Fuel live again.

I saw Fuel when they opened up for Creed at WCCC's Snowball Winterfest
at the Webster in Hartford, CT (sometime in Dec. 97, the date slips my
mind). No one seemed to have any idea who these guys were. I stupidly thought
they might be a Metallica cover band. Anyway, the four guys all had a powerful
presence on the stage, especially the lead singer who commanded everyone's
attention and seemed to be having just as much fun as everyone else. At
one point he brought some girls up on stage to dance with him. They soared
through songs like 'Bittersweet' and quickly won the crowd (who had no
clue who they were) over. Everyone at the show was very impressed and surprised
by this band. Not only did they put on a great performance (one that many
thought rivaled Creed's) they were also nice enough to let Creed borrow
their equipment, because Creed's equipment was swiped in Boston the night
before. Many thanks to Fuel for saving the show in more sense than one.

I just got back from seeing Fuel at home in Lancaster, PA at the Village.
The show, as always, was awesome. The band rocked out at the packed house
to songs old and new. They introduced the new song which includes the line
"and if I cant find my way back to me" as the title for their upcoming
album. I've seen Fuel dozens of times and they did not get any better than
this evening. Porcelin was well represented and every song except 'King
For A Day' was played from Hazelton. Included in the set were a few pre-Porcelin
songs and Zeppelin's 'California'. The highlight of the evening for me
was a rockin'-punk rendition of the Beatles classic 'Revolution' (which
I first heard them play the night before Christmas at The Chameleon Club)
that would have made a 1960's Sex Pistols crowd go crazy... My best wishes
to fuel as they tour the US and I cant wait until the release of the next
album and until they play Pittsburgh again.

Fuel gave a farewell performance on January 29, 1998 which brought
down the deck at Wanda's. By farewell, I mean they will be gone for about
three months, according to bass player Carl Bell. The are taking a West
Coast swing before their release of Sunburn, which is due out March 31
on Sony 550 records. A full house cheered and sang along with such songs
as 'Shimmer', 'Bittersweet', 'Ozone Baby', and the house-rockin 'Mary Pretends'.
Like Jeff Watson stated, they also sang 'Revolution,' which was outstanding.
If you have not seen them, hopefully you can catch when they return. Wish
them luck and buy the album called SUNBURN, which should be released March
31, 1998.

Anyone who was unable to see Fuel perform at Springfest, along with
the Jellybricks, 2 Skinny Js, and Orange 9mm, I am truly sorry. No review
of the performance will be able to reflect the amount of sheer energy and
euphoria felt by those present. Once again, I am sorry.
After seeing the 'Brix play to a crowd of maybe forty or so people
in the auxillary parking lot just off the base of Roundtop's Minuteman
slope, and 2 Skinny Js play to eighty people, I began to wonder if the
hometown crowd would grow once Fuel took the stage. Any doubts I had were
immediatly crushed when Carl, Brett, Jeff, Kevin, and company backed the
Fuel bus to the stage and began to set up. My friends and I waited patiently
at front center stage, pointing out details like the band's pair of immaculate
new amps, the weights being placed on Kevin's drums to keep them from tipping,
and Brett's choice color of nail polish- metallic blue-purple. After a
short delay (the sub-forty degree temps weren't very condusive to guitar
tuning), the band started.
The show's setlist order escapes me now, but they played 'Untitled,'
'Shimmer,' 'Mary Pretends,' 'Jesus or a Gun,' 'Bittersweet,' 'Sunday Girl,'
'Sunburn,' 'Song For You,' 'New Thing,' and closed with an unbelievable
version of 'Ozone Baby.' The end of the next-to-last song was still ringing
when Brett stepped to the mic and said, "We have one more." The next moment,
Kevin started the drum line, and I grabbed my best friend and flung him
across the crowd, erupting the largest and best pit of the set. When the
bridge of the song ('My sun on you...') was reached, the band slowed down
to maybe fifty percent of the normal tempo, with Brett stretching each
syllable out, making myself and other look around and think, 'Oh, my god.'
Fuel ended their set, and most of us stood in front of the stage, eyes
dazed in disbelief, merely thinking, 'Oh, my God.'
One word decription of the show: Un-fucking-believable.
Note: Injuries suffered by me during the set: four bruises (bicep,
hip, elbow, knee), seven abrasions (both knees, elbows, hands, shoulder),
one chipped tooth, two sprained toes, and one concussion (I slammed my
head off some other guy then off the ground. But it was fun.).

OK...I just got home from seeing Fuel playing at Irving Plaza in Manhatten.
They played with Semisonic and God Lives Underwater...but Fuel was the
reason I waited in line in the rain to see...the band I woke up early and
rushed to buy tickets for. I've been a fan of Fuel since may a year ago,
when I met Brett, the lead singer.
Tonight before the show, I saw Brett walking around and I recognized
him. After going up to him...he remembered me, and we had a little conversation.
He's a mad cool guy and a HELL of a singer. A real down to earth guy who
seems to love playing his music. I knew that Fuel was awesome but since
I saw them last year they have improved a hundred percent.
The band released "Shimmer" on K-Rock 92.3 and people really dig it.
It seemed that everyone at the show was there to see Fuel. Tickets were
being scalped on the street for a hundred bucks...so Brett told me. Just
before they went on...I went right up front and got a spot. The curtain
went up and the crowd went NUTS. Fuel kicked our asses with the first song
and didn't waste anytime doing it again with another. It was a heck of
a pit and an even better show. I was disappointed when it was over; time
flew by and it seemd like it was over in two minutes instead of an hour.
In short...Fuel is a rockin band who blew the roof off of Irving Plaza.
Brett is a really cool guy in person and an energetic singer to say the
least. I was thouroughly impressed. Ive been a fan for a year and I think
that they are going to get big real soon. Much props to Fuel and I can't
wait till I get to see them again.

I saw Fuel for the first time at the Y100 Feztival. It was a really
good set. Although I had heard "Shimmer" on the radio like 2 or 3 times,
I had never really heard Fuel before. This performance changed that. I
saw them on the side stage and I managed to get right up close with my
friends. Anyway, I was really impressed with them. They sounded great live,
their show had a lot of energy and was music you could really mosh to,
which is my favorite kind of music. I didn't catch the whole set because
I had to leave school early to get there and they had already started playing
by the time I did. Even though I didn't know the names of many of the songs,
some of them made such an impression that I remembered what they were when
I heard them on the CD (which I bought the next day). I remember loving
"Untitled", "Jesus or a Gun", and "Sunburn". I also remember them playing
"Shimmer" and everyone going crazy. The crowd reacted really well to the
guys and I was thrilled to find out about such a great new band. After
their set, I got to meet Carl and he was really cool. Brett was meeting
fans too, but I never got to get to him because he was surrounded by girls.
Maybe next time! I can't really say too much else about the show; it is
hard for me to describe it because I didn't really know the band that well
at the time. But, I can to tell you that after seeing them, they became
one of my favorite bands(my other favorites being Bush and Nirvana). I
have gotten many of my friends into Fuel too. I stayed up until 1:30 to
tape them when they were on Conan O'Brien. And they were the first band
I had heard in a year that made me change the song on my answering machine
to one that isn't by Bush ("Shimmer" is on there right now). I am planning
on going to see them September 13th at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia
when they open for Creed. So, basically a really great performance turned
me into a pretty big fan.

I just have one thing to say to start out... FUEL FRICKEN RULES!!!!
They are so much better live than I expected... Well, I expected them to
be awesome, but I didn't know they'd be THAT incredible. The order went
something like this.. 'Untitled', 'Bittersweet', 'Jesus or a Gun', 'Song
for You', 'Sunburn', 'Shimmer', 'New Thing', 'Mary Pretends', and 'Ozone'.
They were just so incredible, I can't describe what a rush it gave me..
'Ozone' was the BEST!!! I got the shit kicked out of me (kinda) during
it, but I loved it... Before they played it, Brett said, "Well, this is
one of my very favorites. A couple weeks ago we were playing this song
and I hit my head on Carl's guitar and had to get 8 stitches. So, as you
can guess, this song can get kinda out of hand... it's called 'Ozone',"
and then they just started rockin the whole place with it... The mosh was
incredible, everyone went crazy. And I LOVED IT!!! Fuel and Gandharvas
(or something) opened for Creed... Gandharvas was first, and they SUCKED!!
Then Fuel came out and rocked the whole place, and Creed came out after
them and I think most of the crowd liked them more, but I still think Fuel
ROCKED over Creed, although Creed was pretty dang good... Before the concert,
I saw Carl Bell walking over to the backstage area, but I was the only
one in the whole freakin' place that recognized him... I also saw Jeff
Abercrombie... I didn't say anything to them though, I'm too shy.. Oh well
though.
Anyway, Fuel rules, they're the best in the world, and I can't wait
to see them again!!!!!!!!!

Yea baby! Ok, I had the binoculars so I was looking at them [Fuel].
They ROCKED! They were the best band to play that day! Brett told the story
of how he closed his eyes during "Ozone" and Carl accidently hit him with
his guitar and Brett had to have 8 stitches... Lets see... oh yeah! Someone
lost their drivers liscense, so Brett had it onstage and said that he was
going to rob a licqour store and say that he was the dude on the liscense...
pretty funny stuff! Brett got hit by something in the head that someone
threw. People were throwing all kinds of stuff...shirts, hats, bottles,
glowsticks, everything you could think of. ( but not just at Fuel...at
everybody) They sang their whole cd except "Hideaway" then left. They were
so awesome! They were jumping all over the place and headbanging and everything,
it was rad!

Fuel was so awesome!!!!!!!!!!!! They were better than my friends and
I thought they would be. We went just to see Fuel, didn't care much about
seeing Creed, but we wanted to see Fuel sooooo bad and they were so worth
it. Brett looked so HOT and he had on these green cargo pants with a hole
right at the point of the crotch, which was like heaven. Kevin of course
was not looking too shabby either, he had his shirt off as soon as he walked
to his drumset, oh my god, what a bod!!!!!!! I'd love to go see them again
whenever they come back here. Being that I was up against the lil wall
that's right in front off the stage, I got many bruises, but it was all
well worth it, I did not mind at all getting the bruises. FUEL FUCKING
ROCKS!!!

After waiting in line for about two hours, the door opened and much
to my suprise... all the security there were just making sure people didn't
run rather than "frisk" anyone. We took our spot on the track and after
suffering intolerably through an entire Dave Matthew's disc, the Badlees
came on. They put on a suprisingly up tempo and good show. I really liked
their new single and the new album should be pretty good as well.
"The X" DJs came out with one of the Gold records which were just presented
the band the night before in New York. That was cool to see.
SET LIST w/ NOTES
-- Samuel L. Jackson quote
-- Never heard that at a show before and I thought it
was killer...
-- Untitled
-- Probably the best version of this song that I've heard.
They had so much energy and absolutely tore through it.
-- Jesus or a Gun
-- Fed from the energy of Untitled and nailed this one...
one of the best
-- Song For You
-- Not a song that I expected, but good mid-tempo song
after 1st two scorchers
-- Bittersweet
-- I've heard the alternate version of Bittersweet a bunch
of times and still can't decide if I like it or not
-- Sunburn
-- They put so much emotion into this one tonight... blew
me away
-- Its Come to This
-- One of my lesser fav. songs, still good though and
they nailed it
-- New Thing
-- Sounded like Brett had some mic problems / sound problems
-- They slowed it down and personally I like the rip rocking version
-- Walk the Sky
-- Expected this one at some point and they didn't disappoint...
one of the best songs of the night
-- Sister Mary Innocent
-- Expected this and they pulled it off great... another
highlight of night
-- Hideaway
-- Not one of my fav. Fuel songs but Brett and Carl did
it well
-- Shimmer
-- For having played this song for every person, in every
radio station, in every shit hole club they still played it like they did
the first time I saw them play it
-- Mary Pretends
-- One of the 1st time I saw a decent sized mosh pit...
there should have been one much earlier though
-- Sunday Girl
-- Expected this one tonight but won't next week at Crowbar
-- Ozone
-- Good version but not as good as in March at X-Fest
at Roundtop
-- Brett had more mic problems and couldn't sing last 5 "Suckers" until
he went to Carl's mic
-- Revolution - Encore
-- More initial mic problems for Brett - eventually he
gave it up and used Carl's which led to a good version with different stage
setup
OVERALL THOUGHTS
-- Kevin had a mean drum solo right before Mary Pretends. It was much
longer and better than any previous I have heard him do.
-- I really like Mary Pretends, Sunday Girl, and Ozone played together.
They are almost like Pearl Jam's Mamasan trilogy
-- I was kind of disappointed that the Badlees induced more nudity
than Fuel did... oh well.
-- They were really into the show. Whoever said that Brett was drugged
up at a show couldn't be further from the truth. I talked to Jeff before
the show and he looked tired as hell but they got all kinds of energy from
the hometown folks.
-- Great show on a big stage... almost too big... Jeff ran around too
much and I half expected Brett to jump on a big speaker but he didn't.
