Ringo Starr's "Vertical man" |
About the album Vertical releases and pictures
|
After releasing "Time takes time" in 1992, Ringo returns in great style. In fact, he has not stopped during the last years. His All Starr Band has toured many times and released two live albums, both containing exciting performances.
Now in 1998 Ringo has prepared a new studio release, and this time he counts with some heavy-weight mates from the world of music. Ozzy Osbourne, Alanis Morissette, Steve Tyler, Brian Wilson and Tom Petty are among the guests, not to mention the ultraspecial appearances of George Harrison and Paul McCartney. As usual, Ringo has created a party mood.
This is the list of the songs included on the album:
One | A true album opener, with everything required to become a hit. There is a beautiful chorus and a warm feeling. |
What In The...World | One of the most beautiful songs from "Vertical man". It remind the listener of the early seventies Ringo's albums. Paul McCartney plays bass and sing backing vocals. Joe Walsh also appears as guest. |
Mindfield | An uptempo number, with catching chorus. |
King Of Broken Hearts | Just to hear the guest appearance of George Harrison gorgeously playing slide guitar is reason enough to pay special attention on this song |
Love Me Do | Predestined to become a classic remake, this terrific version introduces Steven Tyler on the album |
Vertical Man | A psychedelic song, which evoques "Sgt. Pepper's" and "Magical mistery tour". Beautiful! |
Drift Away | One of the best songs from "Vertical man". Tom Petty and Alanis Morissette make wonderful vocals appearances. Lovely chorus! As a curiosity, Ringo plays acoustic guitar. On the booklet there's a photo of him playing a Rickenbacker. |
I Was Walkin' | Again Paul McCartney joins Ringo on this rocking number |
La De Da | The first hit from the CD. This will probably drive people mad when performed live. Again Paul appears as backing vocalist |
Without Understanding | A very interesting mix of rock and modern music. Very original instrumentation, with am epic chorus. |
I'll Be Fine Anywhere | A powerful rock'n'roll number in the old rockers tradition. Guess who's playing guitar... Here's a clue: his name starts with "George" and ends with "Harrison". :o) |
Puppet | Another lovely title, with tipical Ringo percussion, again evoquing his work in the seventies. |
I'm Yours | A beautiful ballad Ringo dedicates to his beautiful wife Barbara. To show his love for her, Ringo has called hte best man he could to make the string arrangement: Sir George Martin |
The album release date is June 16, so go get your copy of it!!
The track "Everyday" appears on a bonus 7" vinyl single offered by Towers Records, Beatlefest and a few other stores for those who preordered "Vertical man". This vinyl single also brings na unique radio edit of "La de da".

Before "Vertical man" was released, a promo version of "Drift away" was given to radio stations. This promo version included Steve Tyler doing lead vocals instead of Tom Petty. Tyler's lead vocal was cut in demand of his record company. |
Everyday

Included on a promotional vinyl single and the Japanese release of "Vertical man", this became the first vertical rarity. Here there's an audio file for download. Emjoy it!! |
La de da (radio edit)

The promo edit of "La de da", relased on a promotional single, has extra backing vocals on the intro. |
Mr. Doubleitup
477 kb
|
One of the bonus tracks included on Best Buy bonus single, this is a country/ rhythm and blue number, in the old tradition of "Coochy-coochy". |
Sometimes
319 kb
|
The second number from Best Buy bonus single is a catching country number with a beautiful steel guitar melody. The melody sometimes evoques the classic tune "Crying", from Ringo's famous "Rotogravure" album. |
Goodnews
375 kb
|
The final number from Best Buy bonus single is a hit-style rockiong number. It's a shame it's only released on this promotional single, since it has all the elements to become a hit: a rough guitar riff as intro, a catching chorus and a good message: "Good news is on the way". This line is maybe a reference to the promotional slogan for "Help!"(the film): "Help is on the way!".
