Magical Mystery Tour
The TV film of Magical Mystery Tour was not the happiest of Beatles ventures, but it yielded a double EP soundtrack of merit, repackaged in the States as a full album with the addition of some A and B sides of the period - "Hello, Goodbye", "Penny Lane", "Strawberry Fields Forever", "Baby You're A Rich Man" and "All You Need Is Love". The CD reissue adopted the American version, but omitted the souvenir booklet. Like the singles mentioned, the Magical Mystery Tour songs themselves are definite Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band era types. George Harrison being weird and Eastern ("Blue Jay Way"), Paul McCartney melody melancholy ("The Fool On The Hill") and John Lennon going out of his tree ("I Am The Walrus"), plus the splashy and brass boosted title track, some cod '30s nonsense ("Your Mother Should Know") and a throwaway instrumental ("Flying"). An erratic bunch, but worth it for the line about "semolina pilchard climbing up the Eiffel Tower" alone.
