The Hollies were one of the most consistently popular groups of the beat era. Apart from their first release in May 1963, all of their singles during that period entered the British Top Twenty. They came from Manchester, Clarke and Nash had been childhood friends had sung together in several groups and as a duo named Ricky and Dane, and their Everlys-influenced harmonies remained the characteristic feature of The Hollies' sound. They became "The Fourtones" in 1962 with the addition of Haydock and drummer Don Rathbone. Further name-changes occurred later in the year when they called themselves The Deltas, before settling on The Hollies (taking the name from fifties rocker Buddy Holly). In early 1963, the group was signed to EMI's Parlophone label by producer Ron Richards after he saw them perform at the Cavern Club in Liverpool. Shortly before entering the studio for their first session 17 year-old guitarist Tony Hicks joined. Bobby Elliott replaced Rathbone shortly after the first record was released. The first few releases were fairly ordinary covers of R'n'B songs. But "Just One Look" began a long run of hits in a more harmony-based pop style that was better suited to their talents. Haydock left in 1966 and Nash in 1969 to be replaced by Bernie Calvert and Terry Sylvester (ex The Escorts and The Swinging Blue Jeans) respectively. In terms of producing hit records, The Hollies proved to be Britain's third most popular group throughout the sixties, only The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were more successful.
