Grew out of late fifties Liverpool rock 'n' roll band Gus & The Thundercaps. By 1962 the group had changed their name to Gus Travis & The Midnighters. In November 1962 Freddie Starr was recruited, initially to provide comedy relief, but he soon took over as leader of the group. Travis meanwhile, exited to team up with another band, The Four Dymonds.
In 1963 they won a recording contract with Decca and released their debut single, "Who Told You", produced by Joe Meek, and embarked on a nationwide tour promoting the record. Despite their best efforts, this record and subsequent releases disappeared without trace. The band split in the early summer of 1964.
Starr later sang with The Flamingos before teaming up with another group, The Delmont Four, as Freddie Starr & The Delmonts. This group lasted until the end of the 60's.
Starr later became one of Britain's leading comedians.
