Chapter One

The story picks up a few weeks after Ryan and Gillian's official divorce.

Ryan wipped beads of sweat from his forehead and rested his hands on his knees. He had just finished a run and was now standing in the park. Ryan slowly stood straight up and noticed a brunette haired women sitting at the sandbox. Ryan had a quick flashback of Gillian sitting at the sandbox on their anniversary. He ran over to the women. His first thought was that women was Gillian.

"Gillian?" Ryan called out running over to the sandbox.

"Gillian" he called as he placed his hand on her shoulder.

The women turned to Ryan, and Ryan saw it wasn't Gillian. A little girl with pigtails ran over to the sandbox calling out for her mom.

Ryan smiled in embarassment "I'm sorry, I thought you were someone else. Sorry." He said backing away.

The women nodded poiletly and Ryan walked over to the park bench. He sat down and placed his head in his hands. "I've got to forget her. I've got to move on." Ryan shook his head and stood up. He looked at a young couple. They were most defintely in love. They were walking hand in hand, laughing, and totally oblivious to everyone else. Ryan imagined himself and Gillian happy and totally in love. For a moment he smiled. But his smile faded as Ryan snapped back to reality. He turned away from the couple. "But how? How can I forget her?" he said to himself "How can I possibly forget the single most best thing to have happened to me?"

(Gillian has moved back into Wildwind)

"What do you think?" Gillian asked Dimitri holding up a blue dress and then a black one "Which one do you like better?"

Dimitri laughed "They both look the same to me. Either one would look great on you I'm sure." Dimitri slipped off his glasses "What's the big occassion? A hot date?"

"Oh some hospital dinner. I thought I'd make an apperance, ya know."

"Are you going with a certain Doctor?" Dimitri asked a bit of question in his voice.

"Yes, I am going with Jake" Gillian said smiling "But we are just friends. I'm not ready to move on." she paused for a moment "Not yet anyway." Gillian said, the smiling fading from her face.

Dimitri nodded "I understand." He looked at his cousin and decided to change the subject "Have a great time tonight, and don't forget to be home by 10:00" Dimitri smiled and pointed a finger Gillian.

Gillian laughed "But DAD, that't SOOOO early, all the other girls are gonna be out till at least 12"

"Too bad young lady! As long as you live under MY roof you'll obey by my rules."

Gillian laughed and saluted Dimitri "Yes sir" and she clicked her heels and walked out of the room to change.

(Later that night)
Gillian walked down the stairs with a simple strapless black dress with a matching scarf. She had her hair curled and piled on her head. Little ringlets framed her face.

Dimitri had alredy let Jake in and the two were talking as Gillian walked into the room.

"I sure hope you weren't talking about me" Gillian said as the two men stopped talking to stare at Gillian.

"You look absoutley georgeous." Jake said taking Gillian's hand

"Yes you sure do" Dimitri said noting that it was his cue to leave "Well kids have a nice time and don't do anything I wouldn't do." Dimitri winked at Jake and Gillian and walked out of the living room.

"Well you ready?" She asked and Jake extended his hand and Gillian clasped it as the two walked out of Wildwind.

(A few hours later)

Ryan was busy working the bar at SOS. "Give me another" an already durnk man demanded and slapped a few dollar bills and his empty beer glass on the bar table.

"I'm sorry sir, but I'm gonna have to cut you off." Ryan said pouring a drink for another customer.

"But why?" the man asked "I'm just gettin started."

"You've had plenty to drink. I'm calling you a cab."

The sly smile faded from his face and was replaced by anger "Maybe you didn't hear me." The man yelled "But I want another beer."

Ryan turned toward the man "Maybe you didn't hear me. You've had more then enough to drink already. I'm cutting you off. Now go home and sleep it off." Ryan turned away from the man and started to organize some of the bottles under the bar.

The man grab the beer glass and smashed it on the counter. Ryan quickly turned raised his head toward the man.

The man gave Ryan one last angry glance and stormed out of SOS. Ryan started wipping the glass. Just then he yelled "Damn it". Blood started pouring from his left hand.

Hayley who was just heading over to the bar, noticed Ryan was bleeding and rushed over to his side.

"What happened?" she asked worridly. She put her hand on Ryan's back and led him to the water facuet. She ran his hand under the water.

"I was picking up some glass and I cut my hand."

Hayley examined the cut "Well I think you need stitches."

"No, I'll just get a band-aid. I'm sure it'll be fine."

"Seriously Ryan, it looks deep." Hayley said grabbing a towel to wrap around the cut.

Ryan looked at the cut and noticed it hadn't stopped bleeding. And it could tell it was pretty deep "Fine." he said wrapping the towel around his hand.

"I'll drive you. Just let me run and tell Mateo."

Hayley came rushing back and the two quickly left for the hospital.

************

Jake and Gillian were returning from the dinner and Jake wanted to stop by the hosptial quick before he dropped Gillian off. The two were laughing about one of the boring speakers. They were making fun of his long speech.

"I swear he was up there for an hour" Jake said

"Only an hour? I was beginning to think I had spent the night!" Gillian said laughing.

Ryan and Hayley were just leaving the ER room. They could hear two people laughing and Ryan turned his head to see that it was Jake and Gillian. Ryan's body stiffened and his face fell. He thought Gillian looked absoutley stunning. He remember seeing the happy couple in the park and continued to watch Jake and Gillian giggling as Jake finished writing a note to the nurses. His eyes filled with tears and a lump formed in his throat.

Hayley met Ryan's gaze. She couldn't think of what to say or do. She could already see pain in his eyes. Gillian looked up and saw Ryan and Hayley standing just down the hall. Gillian locked eyes with Ryan's. The smile from her face fell as he noticed a single tear slip from his eye.
