Scene III: Paris, near Duncan's barge.
[Richie and Duncan are returning home after an evening at the theatre.]
RICHIE: "Now, THAT's what I call opera!"
DUNCAN: "THAT was not opera."
RICHIE: "They sang everything and it had more of a plot than the last opera you took me to."
DUNCAN: "Richie! TOMMY is not what I had in mind when I said you should experience opera."
RICHIE: "But, Mac, it was The Who on tour!"
DUNCAN: "I don't care if it was the Metropolitan Opera Company. That's not opera."
RICHIE (totally ignoring Duncan's comment): "Did you get a good look at the lead singer, Roger Daltrey? He looked an awful lot like your old friend Fitzcairn! I bet Fitz would agree it was opera."
[They are met at the barge by LANDRY who fawns all over Duncan.]
LANDRY: "You're him!"
DUNCAN: "No, I'm not him. I'm sure you want someone else."
LANDRY: "You're Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod?"
DUNCAN: "Yes."
LANDRY: "Then you are the one. The chosen champion of Good."
DUNCAN: "WHAT?!"
LANDRY(singing to the tune of "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" from
"Evita" by Andrew Lloyd Webber):
It won't be easy.
You'll think I'm nuts
As I try to explain
Your new role,
How you're Earth's only hope
Despite all of your flaws.
You must believe me.
What you will see
Is the dead you once slew,
Arising again from the fog.
Unless you do what you must do.
It's all or nothing, Highlander.
The battle of Good and Evil.
You are our Champion.
You are our last hope.
If not, we're all at
The end of our rope.
You must believe me, Highlander
The truth is you have to fight it
Unholy Evil
And its confusion.
You must remember,
It's all illusion.
And as for Richie,
And as for Joe,
There's only so much they can do,
For they're only the sidekicks,
The hero is you.
You have to face this.
Running around taking everyone's head,
But watch who you whack in the dark,
Heads don't go back on after sparks.
Listen to me now, Highlander.
I'll tell you how to defeat it.
It can be beaten.
There's nothing to it.
Now listen closely,
Here's how you do it...
[LANDRY's song trails off as he realizes DUNCAN hasn't heard a word he's said. DUNCAN has been too distracted by the dry ice fog and red lights at the upper left of the stage. In the midst of the fog stands a man in a black cape and mask. He removes the mask and is revealed to be...]
DUNCAN: "Horton?"
RICHIE: "Who?"
[DUNCAN moves closer to HORTON. Richie's gaze moves up and over the red fog area, but he doesn't appear to notice anything. As the song progresses, Richie leaves LANDRY to follow after DUNCAN.]
HORTON (singing to the tune of "I Am Woman" by Helen Reddy):
"I am Evil. Here
me laugh!
As I tear the world in half!
You don't know if I'm real or you're insane.
'Cause you killed me twice before
And I kept coming back for more.
And you're gonna hafta kill me once again!
Oh, yes! I'm bad!
And I'm gonna cause you pain!
Yes, you'll pay the price.
Friends will think that you're insane.
If I had to, I could kill ev'ryone.
I am strong!
I am invincible!
I am EVIL!"
[At the climax of the song, HORTON gestures back toward LANDRY who clutches his throat and falls to the stage. As soon as he does, HORTON disappears as the red lights go out.]
DUNCAN: "Where'd he go?"
RICHIE: "Who?"
DUNCAN: "Horton.
RICHIE: "Horton's dead."
DUNCAN: "We've thought that before."
RICHIE: "Mac, there was no one there!"
DUNCAN: "But I saw him!"
RICHIE [gesturing back toward LANDRY]: "Ask the nutcase! There was no one there."
[DUNCAN and RICHIE both suddenly notice that LANDRY is lying lifeless on the stage. They run to his side.]
DUNCAN: "He's dead."
[Lights out.]
