When Captain James Ellison is the only one to survive a helicopter crash in the Peruvian jungle he develops enhanced senses allowing him to see, hear, smell, feel and taste things normal humans can't. He is stranded in the jungle for 18 months with the Chopec-tribe. When he is rescued and returns to civilization his senses go away. He joins the Cascade PD after his debriefing. Five years later his enhanced senses come back during a stakeout assignment. Jim can not control them and have no idea what he is dealing with. No doctor can find anything wrong with him. In his desperate search for an explanation he come across a young grad student doing a thesis on sentinels, Blair Sandburg. With Blair's help he gradually gain more and more control over his senses. They manage to convince Jim's Captian, Simon Banks, that Blair have to work with Jim in order to help him with his senses. When Blair's home is blown up he moves in with Jim.
