| Something I really like about Hamburg is the number and quality of the markets. I want to recommend four of them to you - they are all different in style and unique in their very own way: Isemarkt You'll need good hiking shoes because from end to end it's one km. But "Isemarkt" is one of the most beautiful markets in Hamburg with the best variety of everything you could possibly want to buy at a market. One place you shouldn't miss is a brown car owned by the Mrs. and Mr. Pingel. Try their home-made pralinés - best in town! Open Tuesday and Friday, 8.30 a.m. - 2 p.m., Isestrasse, Eppendorf Goldbekmarkt This is the market for southern cuisine: Italian, Arabian, mediterranean foods and goods - I advise you to either have eaten well before you go there or carry a biiig bag or rucksack ;-) Open Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, 8.30 a.m. - 1 p.m., Goldbekufer, Winterhude Markt am Turmweg Of the four markets I chose this is the most regional one. Local fruit from "Altes Land", vegetables from "Vier- und Marschlande", fresh seafood from the coast - another place to please your eyes, nose and taste all at the same time. Two places you'll want to check out are "Der Dithmarscher", a small place with a wide variety of salads which makes it hard to decide where to start, the other one is "Fisch Schloh", a renowned place for seafood. Open Thursday, 8.30 a.m. - 14 p.m., Turmweg, Hamburg Fischmarkt Here go go - the one and only "Fish Market" along Elbe River near Landungsbruecken. It's one of the main tourist attractions after a long Saturday night. It's on Sunday mornings - very early! - so I've done it only once so far. But it's a must for everyone who wants to meet all the famous guys and gals at the stands, crying and screaming what they offer - may it be fish or fruit or plants. If you want to buy fish or seafood you have to go past "Fischauktionshalle" and turn left towards the few little fishing boats tied to the landing place at Elbe River, the stands and cars along the long market area aren't bad, but what's better than buying first-hand? Open Sunday - March 15 to November 15: 5-9.30 a.m. (that's right, early Sunday morning!) - November 22 to March 8: 7-9.30 p.m. St. Pauli Fischmarkt, St. Pauli |
