Introduction - Getting Ready for the Trip

Coconut CottageWe always try to go somewhere nice for our anniversary every October and, in 1997, we chose the Abaco Islands in the Bahamas. Since room availability would determine which week we would go, we started our Internet search for a place to stay and found the perfect spot: Watercolours Cottages on Lubbers Quarters Cay.

At the time we rented them, there was a choice of two solar-powered Bahamian style cottages and we ended up renting the larger one, Coconut Cottage, which had a wonderful view of the Abaco Sound. As you can see in the picture, the windows of the cottage were one of the high spots on the island which is only 1 mile long and 1/2 mile wide. The owners emailed me in 2003 to let me know they have upgraded both cottages with air conditioning and 110 electricity and solar power is now used as a back-up.

After the cottage was rented, we needed to find a boat for the week. Since I tend to get a little queasy if the waves are too high, we decided a twin hulled boat would give us better stability in the water. We contacted LaySue Rentals on Marsh Harbor, the island we would be flying into, and arranged for a twin engine twin hull Sea Cat at a reasonable price. We called it our "Cadillac for the week" since it rode so smooth and I never felt sick once, even when the seas coming thru the small outer islands were about 4 feet and coming at us from all sides it seemed to me. But look at me in the picture, I'm still smiling since it proved to be a great, steady boat for cruising thru the islands.

our boat still smiling

There was something different to do every day of our trip. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the tropical breezes as you come along with us on a week-long cypertrip in that little bit of paradise called the Abacos.
