FIJI |
If you reached us by going through Geocities & you were wondering why we were stationed in The Tropics neighbourhood...well, here is your answer!
We went to Fiji in December '95 as part of an end-of-school celebration. We had the time of our lives! Fiji is an incredible place. It wasn't only the heavenly setting that made the trip so memorable, it was also the incredibly friendly people (and the fact that we had just finished 12 years of hell and were now free!). Though we both haven't traveled that much, the magic of Fiji will undoubtedly remain with both of us no matter where we travel to next.
"Twelve years of hell, one week of glory!!!"
HERE IS OUR BRIEF GUIDE TO FIJI
* STAYING THERE : There is a wide range of resorts to choose from, both in price and activities offered. Hotel gradings range from budget to deluxe, but remember that bigger is not always better. Choose the hotel which caters for your needs, how much you enjoy your holiday will largely depend on it.
* CLIMATE : Subtropical. In winter (April to October) temperatures range from 15-25 degrees C, and in summer 18-31 degrees C. The wet season is from November to March when there is a possibility of cyclones.
* CLOTHING : Very casual clothing throughout the whole year. You'll find that you'll quickly lose your shoes & spend every moment barefoot. Apart from some of the more exclusive hotels such as the Shangri-La Fijian Resort, dress is casual to suit the mood... shorts & shirts (at the most!) are acceptable. Once you get to Fiji, you'll soon realise that dress reflects the laid back mood. If you want to spend your holiday in a swimming costume & sarong, go for the smaller resorts, like The Hideaway Resort (which is where we stayed!)
* CURRENCY : One Fijian dollar equals about one Australian dollar & the coins are also very similar in size. Be prepared to pay high prices at the larger resorts, especially for meals.
* LANGUAGE : English is widely spoken & understood. Other languages are Fijian and Hindustani.
* BANKS : In major towns & at Nadi Airport.
* CREDIT CARDS : Most international cards are accepted, even at the smaller resorts.
* VISA : No visa is required for Australian Passport holders.
* TAXIS : Do not operate on a meter system, therefore be sure to negotiate a sum when you get into the taxi. Nadi Airport displays a large banner which will give you an idea of prices.
* TIPPING : Not expected. If you're feeling generous, give to the staff X-mas fund.
* GETTING THERE : Air Pacific is Fiji's national airline, but other airlines such as Qantas will also get you there. For the Aussies out there reading this - Low season fares from Australia are about $700 from Sydney & Brisbane, and go up to around $1000 from Adelaide & Perth.

Fiji is the perfect holiday haven & it's less than 4 hours by air from eastern Australia. Whether your idea of a holiday is lying around on sun-drenched beaches or taking a village safari, Fiji has it all & whatever holiday you want, Fiji is ideal. (The Fiji travel bureau should be paying us for this! : )) If you want more from your holiday than sitting under a palm tree, check out the adventure escapes available, including safari's & outback adventures, lagoon cruises, or take a thrilling boat ride in a shotover jet! If you are planning to spend your holiday entirely in a resort, pick one which caters for your particular interests...different resorts cater for families, golfers, scuba divers, and the young at heart! Also, each resort offers a wide variety of activities, from windsurfing to city shopping tours. Also, our advice is that if you want a more casual & relaxed type of holiday, go for the smaller resorts - you'll be pestered less by staff waiting on you, you'll meet a lot more people, and become familiar with the resort a lot quicker. This is not to say that smaller resorts do not cater for your needs, all Fijian resorts do this exceptionally well. Particularly if you are young & want to meet people your age (apart from the fact that the smaller resorts are cheaper), you'll find that you'll meet a far greater number of people in a smaller or moderately graded resort than in a deluxe one. Smaller resorts also show off Fiji's real beauty that little bit more by not hiding it with buildings. Larger resorts obviously also have a lot to offer and this is clearly shown by their rising profits! Just remember that finding the right resort for you will have a lot to do with how much you enjoy your holiday.
A word of warning about hotels... if you want to go to Fiji to see beaches & palm trees, you'll have to stay at a resort on the Coral Coast or on one of the islands. Hotels centered in Nadi are there mostly for overnight stays & you'll see very little if you stay in one for the duration of your holiday. Many travel packages offer cheap holidays, but read the small print, will you be staying in Nadi?
Our hotel choice was The Hideaway Resort on the coral coast. The resort is just the right size, so we didn't get lost. We met a lot of people & even became friends with the staff (which is not very hard cos everyone in Fiji is soooo friendly). This resort definately caters for the young... or the young at heart! This resort is great & we found it the perfect choice for our holiday.
~ OUR TOP 5 FIJI TIPS :
1. Leave your impatience at home! Everything in Fiji is very slow & laid back. Expect to wait a while for your meal...they're probably catching the fish! This mood is part of what makes Fiji so unique & it's not that hard to get used to. 2. Pick the hotel / resort to suit the type of holiday YOU want. 3. There's a lot more to do in Fiji than sit under a palm tree... get out of the resort at least once & go on a village tour to meet the locals. 4. If you get the chance, sample some traditional food... many of the resorts offer a cultural tour which may include a traditional meal. The food is absolutely DELICIOUS!!! 5. Try KAVA!!!!!!!... this is an absolute must & no Fiji holiday is complete without it. It really isn't as bad as everyone says! : )
