Darkroom Familia - "Apocalypse Brown"

Date: 7/11/01

------------Over the years the Darkroom Familia has released more than a fair share of cds, and with all cds they have been affiliated with, there has been a few that have faded from the minds of many as the years passed. Apocalypse Brown is one of these cds, as it is not very well known or readily available at many stores anymore. But maybe that is a good thing, as this is one cd that doesn’t stand out as one of the best cds to come from the Darkroom.
___After a short, pointless intro, Dj Mt and Skarface collaborate on “Ten Fold”, which is a tribute song to their friend Pelon. Pretty much a decent song, as Dj Mt and Skarface reminisce about their dead friend. Track three is another skit, and is again very pointless. Dj Mt and Skarface come together again on “The Projects” which has appeared on more than one cd( which is Generally UNknown to many) and with other titles. Dj Mt really does a good job on this track, with two really tight verses and decent hook. Skarface also comes with a solid performance, and as a result this is the second best track on the cd. “The Operation” is a solo track by Dj Mt, and I particularly don’t care for it much. Dj Mt raps about his childhood and about the unjustness his family had to go through due to their race. “Light’Em (Remix)” is another solo song by Dj Mt, and should be familiar to anyone who has heard Penitentiary Chances. A good song to begin with, the Remix is also good, but not as good as the original as the beat is weaker. The first and last appearance from Lowdown is on “Homiez”, and they provide the best song on the cd. With one of my favorite beats from Dub, I just can’t get enough of this track. Not to mention that Hurricane J, Never, Mickey D, and Never all tear it up, there isn’t one thing not to like about this song except for the fact that it already appeared on the “Up In Smoke” album by Lowdown. None the less, still the best track of the bunch even if its reused(just like every other track). “Libras” is the only song to feature Sir Dyno, and turns out as only an average song with a Mexican style beat to it, and all Spanish lyrics. A big reason I don’t care for this track is due to the fact that I don’t speak Spanish, so for Spanish speaking listens this track may be a more appreciated. Track 9 is an instrumental by Never, and I am not really sure why its on this cd. If anything, its probably was just thrown on to take up some space and beef up the number of tracks. The last song, “Vamos” is another Spanish inspired song, and honestly its the worst track of the cd. Performed by Potencia, its not even a rap song. This sounds like something Serr Dyno’s parents would enjoy, not something fans off hardcore rap would like.
___This cd should have been renamed to Dj Mt’s “Apocalypse Brown”, rather than something the Darkroom Familia put out. Dj Mt appears on 4 of the 7 tracks, and 2 of those are solo songs. But it really doesn’t matter, because this just not a good cd at all. Just about every song on this cd has appeared somewhere else, and that’s not a good thing as this whole cd is just recycled songs, and not very good ones at that. Three songs on this cd also appear on Dj Mt’s Brown, Sick, and Wicked re-release from Dogday records, and all the other songs come from various other cds. Most Darkroom and Lowdown fans have probably already heard these songs before, so there is no really good reason to buy this cd unless you trying to complete your collection. In the end, it looks like Explicit Records was trying to cash on in the name of the Darkroom Familia and slapped together a cd to rush out into the market trying to make a quick buck, and it shows. With only 10 tracks(even if the back says 9, yet another thing wrong with this cd) and two of them being stupid 10 second tracks and one is an intrusmental, it is more like an EP than a full lenght album. Your money would better be spent else where, and if you already own Dj Mt’s double cd of “1 Bullet 4 U& Brown Sick, and Wicked” then you already have about half the songs on this cd. And if you don’t, your money would be better spent buying it than this cd, as you got half of this cd plus another 2 cds worth of music. So unless you are dying to get this cd or see it for a good price in the used cd section, it would be wise to stay away.
