"Sound of the low tide,The smell of the rain; Travellin' alone on my boat and my plane; Take it all in it's as big as it seems ; Count all your blessings and Remember your dreams..."
- Jimmy Buffett, Jimmy Dreams

Jimmy Buffett's musical collaboration with Herman Wouke will begin its run on April 8th in Miami at the Coconut Grove playhouse. "Don't Stop the Carnival" was one of Wouke's most famous novels about a businessman who gives up his life in the big city to run a hotel business in the Tropics. All sorts of things go wrong, making his experience a comedy of errors. Jimmy wrote all of the music for the play and will even be making a few minor guest appearances. I believe most of the music is Calypso-type, caribbean flavored music. The Miami Herald wrote a great article on Jimmy Buffett (March 27, 1997) that describes a lot of his early life as well as his new project. It's well worth the read!

History Lesson, History Lesson...

The music of Jimmy Buffett is more than a just mere listening experience. It's a type of escapism that enables the average person to be swept away (in his mind) to exotic places like Jamaica, the Keys, and yes- Margaritaville.

Jimmy Buffett was born on Christmas Day on the shores of the Gulf Coast in Pascagoula, Mississippi and later moved to Mobile, Alabama where he was raised. This is where he developed his early Cajun influences and apprecition for country/folk music as evidence on his first two albums, Down to Earth and High Cumberland Jubilee. The Gulf Coast is also where Jimmy developed his love for the sea and sailing largely due to the influences of his grandfather.

Jimmy attended Auburn University, and later recieved a B.S. in History from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1969. Before he signed his first record contract in 1970, Jimmy worked as a writer for Billboard Magazine in Nashville, Tennessee. The original Coral Reefer Band consisted of Jimmy Buffett (Vocals, Guitar); Marvin Gardens (Guitar, Country Maracas); Kay Pasa (Bass); Kitty Litter (Background Vocals); Al Vacado (Drums) .

Opinion:

While GOP's (Grouchy old Parrotheads) tend to be extremely critical about anything that Buffett has recorded since Son of A Son of a Sailor in 1978, I have this to say: It is my opinion that Jimmy has been constantly evolving in his musical expression, and he will continue to do so for the forseable future. Marvin Gardens had a good run, but now he is gone- Dead? Who knows, maybe he's just in hiding... Anyone that believes that he should stick to just one particular style is extremely close-minded and is living in the past. All forms of music evolve, especially over a 26 year period. Learn to appreciate the many different styles of music, and critique them on an individual basis instead of holding on to some musical fantasy that may never be realized. Some of his recordings will be good and others will suck- It's the nature of the business. If you don't like it, then stop attending his concerts and supporting the Margaritaville madness- There are plenty of Parrotheads (and Jimmy Buffett fans) that appreciate it for what it is: Consistantly good music.

"My fantasy has always been to find that perfect laid-back town by the ocean, the kind of place where the locals are all legendary characters who spend their days mixing up margaritas, where the air is always warm, and where the sea is crystal clear - a real Margaritaville of the mind."

-Jimmy Buffett, The Parrot Head Handbook

"Please don't say manana if you don't mean it; I have heard those words for so very long; Don't try to describe the ocean if you've never seen it; Don't ever forget that you just may wind up being wrong."
