According to legend, Blizzard Beach was created when a freak snow storm dumped tons of snow on the western side of Walt Disney World. A ski resort was quickly built with a chairlift, ski jump, and many ski runs. Obviously, the temperatures soon returned to normal. The snow started to melt and as they were about to close the resort, the designers saw an alligator sliding down the slopes and it was then when they decided that it would make a much better water park, than a ski resort. So, the slalom and bobsled runs became water slides, the ski jump became the fastest water slide in the world, the chairlift became a transportation for swimmers, and the alligator who gave them the idea became the parks mascot. The individual attractions at Blizzard Beach include Cross Country Creek, a slow meandering waterway that takes guests seated in inner tubes around the whole park and through a cave and under a snow-making machine where guests get ice cold water dumped on them; Melt-Away Bay, a one-acre wave pool; the Ski Patrol Training Camp, an area designed especially for children with slides and pools; Summit Plummet, the centerpiece of the park, sends guests down a 350-foot slide at 60 mph; Slush Gusher, a tamer version of Summit Plummet; Teamboat Springs, the longest family white water raft ride in the world; Toboggan Racers, an eight-lane slide where guests lying on mats race to be the first past the finish line; Snow Stormers, three slides that send guests down a slalom type ski course; Runoff Rapids, three slides where guests sit in inner tubes and go down dips and turns; Tikes Peak, an area similar to the Ski Patrol Training camp, but for even younger children; and Downhill Double Dipper, two racing slides similar to Tobbogan Racers, but faster. Restaurants at Blizzard Beach include Lottawatta Lodge, Avalunch, the Warming Hut, and Frostbite Freddie's Frozen Freshments and they serve hamburgers, hot dogs, fruit salad, ice cream, drinks, etc. The Beach Haus is Blizzard Beach's only shop and it sells bathing suits, towels, T-shirts, shorts, hats, sunglasses, suntan lotion, etc. It is important to arrive early because chairs are limited and shade is even more limited.
