Houhora Inlet Wagener Museum and Subritzky Homestead
Houhora Inlet on the east coast of Northland is a shallow inlet. At low tide, most of the bay is one large mud flat. Even at high tide local knowledge is necessary to enter and transit the bay to a small harbour. We saw several power and fishing boats and two sailboats at anchor.

At low tide the flats are covered in clam shells and locals dig for pipi's in the soft mud. Pipi's are small clams very similar to the Manila clams we get on the  B.C. Coast.

Our gypsie camp (29168 bytes) We found a nice secluded campground in the Houhoura Heads Motor camp, which is next to the Wagener Museum which contains an eclectic collection of Maori and settler artifacts, most from the Northland region.
