Kaitaia Museum

The 'Southern Cross' provided the first non-stop air service between NZ and Australia, taking off and landing on 90 Mile Beach. Flights took about 15 hours when the weather was good. However there was only one flight per month. The engines probably had to be rebuilt after each flight.
Moa exhibit. The moa was a flightless bird, native to NZ, which became extinct before the arrival of Europeans.

Vlad just couldn't get his mind on taking pitures. This was a small museum but there was a lot of interesting stuff to look at and read. I forgot all about the camera!

(We discovered much later that Kaitaia is the warmest town in NZ. Daily weather stats in newspapers or TV inevitably show Kaitaia as the countries hotspot!)
