Kawakawa | Trains and Toilets
Kawakawa is a small town, a crossroads where the Opua road breaks away from Highway 1. A main steet with a bank, petrol station, 4-Square grocery store, a book store, a couple of souvenir shops, and two ice cream parlours. There are two additional features that make this town stand out; a railway track down the middle of the main street, and the worlds most famous toilets.
The entrance to the World Famous toilets. Men on the left, women on the right. |
New Zealanders take their ablution blocks seriously. Nice stained glass window. I wonder if this helps their daily constitutionals. |
On a more dignified note, Kawakawa is the terminus of the Opua-Kawakawa Steam Railroad. Unfortunately, due to badly needed track improvements, trains are not running at this time. |
The rolling stock stands at the station waiting for the passengers. There are several diesel and steam engines slowly decaying.
There appears to be a lot of maintenance work to be done before the trains will run again. |
