Kerikeri is an important historic spot in New Zealand. The Kerikeri Church Society
Mission House,
built in 1819/22, is the oldest wooden building in New Zealand. The Stone Store, next door,
built in 1832/36 as part of the Kerikeri Mission Station, is the oldest stone building in
New Zealand. In the background of the photo, up on the hill, is the St. James Anglican
Church. And across the Keri Keri river is Rewas
village, a replica of pre-European Maori fishing
village.
The town also has the largest variety of shops and services in the Bay of Islands
area. |
|
New Zealand is a trampers paradise. There
are many well marked hiking and walking (tramping) trails just about everywhere. Kerikeri
is no exception and there is a 4 kilometer walk from the Town Basin along the Kerikeri
River to Rainbow Falls. |
|
Just below the Town Basin the Kerikeri River is deep
enough for sailboats to moor between pilings set along the side of the river. Small farms
and lovely homes overlook the river. |
Not to be confused with Kerikeri, we toured
further north up the coast to a nature preserve on the Karikari
Peninsula. |
