Rawene Ferry | |||||
Overlooking Hokianga Heads and the bar leading into Hokianga Harbour to the huge sand dunes on the north side of the entrance. This entrance from the Tasman Sea can be very treacherous and ships (and boaties) must report to the Coast Guard via VHF radio before attempting passage. | |||||
A small ferry took us across the Hokianga Harbour to Rawene. The water is very shallow and very green. The surrounding countryside of cattle and sheep farms is quite beautiful but the narrow twisting road over and around the hills require care from the driver. | Our Chariot on the Rawene Ferry. Wasn't very busy. There were four cars and a camper van aboard for the 20 minute crossing. You can also get to Rawene by road from Whangarei. |

New Zealand Flax plant. There are two varieties, both of which are quite common along the road. Especially along rivers and in wetlands. Pretty when blooming and a major source of pollen for bees. The native Tui birds love them as well. Maori used the leaves for weaving baskets, clothing and walls for houses. |
