NZ Russell Christchurch Interior

Christchurch, the oldest church in New Zealand is a tranquil spot today, surrounded by the graves of early settlers but bulletholes in the wooden walls are a reminder that it is a survivor of the 1845 rebellion.
Inside, the wooden pews have been made more comfortable for the congregation with locally embroidered cushions depicting ships that have visited, birds, flowers, and local scenes of importance. Every one of the cushions is different.

It was in HMS Beagle that Darwin sailed around the world and made the observations which later formed the basis for his theory of evolution.
HMS Hazard patrolled these waters to protect British interests after the Treaty of Waitangi. A grave marker in the churchyard lists the members of her crew who were killed in the uprising of 1845.
