Taieri Gorge Another Train ride
The only way to see taieri gorge is by railway, or on the back of a sheep. We took the train from Dunedin through Taieri Gorge to the top and then back again. A four hour trip of great sights. There are several tunnel and viaducts along the route as the train wends it way along the sometimes precipitous gorge. The river is not very large and there is little current. Although once in a while the river rises, if the rains are heavy in the mountains, and rushes headlong to the sea. Occasionally we saw heaps of dead trees and bushes well above the current water level showing the height of the flooding waters. Taieri gorge view (8680 bytes)
Taieri gorge train at Dunedin train station (8931 bytes) We got on the train in Dunedin at 2:30 in the afternoon. The train is a mix of older carriages as well as more modern cars with viewing windows in the ceiling. Ours was one of the older cars. The platforms between the cars are open and a good place for taking pictures.
The older cars have wooden interiors with seats that can face either way. The sash windows open for airconditioning. The modern lighting and speakers are incongruous and the seats are a bit narrow and somewhat uncomfortable. Train interior(12477 bytes)
