This is the first time I witness Thaipusam
celebration in Penang. Jasslyn, my roommate took me to the Hindu temples at Waterfall
Road, Penang to watch the celebration. There are all together 4 temples at the place. This
is the most important prayer for the Hindus. Thaipusam day is the birthday of Lord
Murugan. It is estimated that 1/2
million people visited the temple this year. There are a lot of people a long the way to
the temples. Small stalls were set up a long the road to the temples, selling cakes,
fruits, drinks and lot's more. Small statue of Hindu's god were also display at the stall
a long the road. Some of this stalls were sponsored by NGOs or private companies. |
The first temple that we went to is called
Nagarathan Thandayuthapani, which is the temple of Lord Murugan. We need to take off our
shoe before entering the temple. There was already a big crow inside. People were queuing
up to perform their prayer. I am surprised to see that not only Indians but also many
Chinese devotees were waiting patiently to perform their prayer. Banana, betel nut (sirih)
leaf and 2 black Indian incense were place inside a coconut which is cut into half to
offer prayer. On this holly day,
devotees shave their head, some even fast for one week and some carried kavadi to honor
Lord Murugan. It was an exciting experience for me. There was singing, dancing, and
drum beating a long the climb to Arulmigu Bala Thandayuthapani temple. The temple is
located on top of the hill. Devotees bring along a pail of milk to bath the holly Lord
Murugan for blessing.
I am so thrill about the celebration and
I hope to come back again next year. :-)
