Tasik Kenyir, Terengganu  18 July 2002
By: Kucing

To be honest, Tasik Kenyir has never be one of my vacation list until I get an invitation from Uncle Ah Keong to stay at his Kenyir Lake Resort. I met this guy from Kuala Tahan last year during my visit to Taman Negara, Pahang. It turn out to be the best vacation I ever had! The lake is so beautiful,  peaceful, a good place to relax and enjoy the great outdoor.

My sister and I took the 9:00PM Atieza Express Bus from Butterworth to Kuala Terengganu on Friday (12/7/2002) night. We almost miss the bus, thank god the bus driver waited for us until 9:30PM!! I promise myself not to be late again in future to catch any buses or trains. Reach Kuala Terengganu at 5:00AM the next morning, uncle & auntie pick us up from there.

We are so thrill to see the huge lake. It is the biggest man made lake in South East Asia. The water is so clear and turquoise green. Plenty of fishes swimming around. From Pengkalan Gawi, we took a boat to the resort. Kenyir Lake Resort is on Pulau Besar and nearby Saok Waterfall.

Day 1

Jungle trekking to Saok Waterfall, we stumble upon elephant's dung along the track. We also notice some fallen banana trees that has been eaten by the elephants. Cool huh!! Later we kayak to Saok Waterfall again for another dip in the icy cool water. That night uncle cook for us, fried tilapia!! So tasty. I never knew fresh water fish like toman, lampam and tilapia taste so good. Yum Yum...! That night, our nose senses an odour that smells like a wild flower called Bunga Kerangan, but according to uncle it's the smell of an elephant roaming nearby. Wow!! close encounter with the giant.

Day 2

We took a boat to Bewah Cave, Kenyir Dam and Lasir Waterfall. It's a long journey and took us the whole day. Our journey to Taat Cave was a bit disappointed because the water is so shallow and this make our boat difficult to go through the dead tree trunks that is submerge under water. Our boat hits the tree trunk several times. In the end, we had to go back. However this trip is also rewarding to us because we saw elephant's dung again and footprint too! After visiting Kenyir Dam, we head for Lasir Waterfall for a picnic. The best thing I love about Lasir Waterfall is that you can swim with the small fishes inside the pool. Once you get in the pool, they will investigate to see whether you are their food or not by nibbling at you. Sometimes it hurt a bit but I like it, it's fun!! The waterfall is so breath taking and good place to take photo too.

One thing I like to do is canoeing around the lake in the early morning. At this time, the animals are getting ready for their day and if you are lucky you might see them. I feel relax when I'm on the canoe. Listen to the birds singing and sometimes other animal calls that I can't identify. We saw white eagles, black hornbills, burung murai, and few types of fishes like arowana, kalui and lampam. Gosh!! This place is full of animals and plants. A heaven for nature lover.

We want to thank Uncle Ah Keong and auntie for inviting us to their resort and kind hospitality. Great vacation that we won't forget. For more information on Kenyir Lake Resort, check out www.geocities.com/kenyirlakeresort
