Most people thought that Marcia Brady was the perfect Brady. After all, she was the prettiest Brady in school and easily got straight A's. But was she really that great? There are many questions hidden behind the awards and the perfectionism.
When the show started its first season, Marcia lived out every teenage girl's fantasy. She was pretty, got straight A's and was dating Brad Pitt. One night, her jealous sister, Jane, entered her room while she was sleeping and held minty coughdrops under her nose for 2 and a half hours. That incident changed Marcia's life forever. After the coughdrop tragedy, Brad Pitt wouldn't go near her, unless she paid him to take her on a date (20$ an hour). But in the late 90's, Brad Pitt IMed her and wrote "hey babe, I picked up a Friend, so I'll be dissin u!"
Behind Marcia's prettiness, there was also an ugly side. Marcia was pretty when the show started, but the coughdrops started to destroy her apperance. The producers started to make Marcia wear a mask on camera, because she looked so hideous.
Behind Marcia's grades, there also was a bad side. Before Marcia got hooked on coughdrops, she would get straight A's at school by working hard at her schoolwork. After she started to abuse coughdrops, Marcia would skip school all the time. When Marcia was asked about her school work, she responded by saying "School? What is school? I don't know what you're talking abo....Oh, yeah! I remember now. That's that place where I used to go, but now I send Melup there everyday.....Oh no, I wasn't supposed to say that! That was supposed to be a big secret!" When we questioned Marcia some more, she claimed that she was deaf and she couldn't hear us.
I found Melup Brady, sleeping in Marcia's closet. (Melup told us that Marcia often locked her in the family closet, and wouldn't let her out until it was time for Marcia to go to school) By talking to Melup, she seemed to be a very gifted child. Melup was interested in reading books and drawing lots of beautiful pictures. Unfortunately, Melup was neglected by her parents as a child. The producers decided to have somebody on their perfect show that was not neglected as a child. They didn't want an abused teen on their show, so they picked Marcia over Melup.
While Marcia was addicted to coughdrops, she donated all of her money she made from the show to the CLAOA (Coughdrop Lover's Alliance of America). So where Marcia got the money to buy boyfriends, prettiness, good grades and coughdrops? She worked (and still works) part time as a toll booth employee on interstate highways. Working as a toll booth girl was something that she wanted to do for the rest of her life, after she got high on coughdrops. Her goal was to become a Toll Booth employee of the month. In June of 1970, she did just that.
According to the Brady producers, Marcia's coughdrop addiction also lead to a lipbalm addiction, a playdough addiction and a pencil shaving addiction. Marcia claims that she is no longer addicted to anything today
