Petronas Twin Towers - the tallest building in the world

Malaysia is a nation on the rise. In its energetic capital Kuala Lumpur a gigantic project is under way that symbolizes the emerging of the new Asia. The Kuala Lumpur City Center (KLCC) project is a complex of office buildings, hotels and an industrial center. At its heart is the Petronas Twin Towers intelligent office building, which began construction in 1994.

The 88-floor Petronas Twin Towers stand 452 meters tall, surpassing the 443-meter Sears Tower in Chicago to become the world's tallest building. Among reinforced concrete buildings this stunning architectural triumph will also far exceed the 295 meters of Chicago's 311 South Wacker Drive. Soon Asia will be home to the world's tallest building.

The soaring twin cylindrical towers appear to embrace their smaller adjoining wings, and are connected by a sky bridge at the -meter level. The metal curtain wall adopted for the exterior design reflects Islamic architecture, blending tradition with a futuristic image and achieving a rich beauty that sets this building apart from earlier skyscrapers.

The exterior of the Petronas Twin Towers is organized in horizontal ribbons of vision glass and stainless steel which glint and simmer in the sun. A 58.4 meter skybridge at level 41 and 42 links the Twin Towers. The unique double-deck skybridge stands 170 meters above street level with its arch support forming a symbolic gateway to the City Center.

GRAND OPENING 42nd MERDEKA DAY / INDEPENDENCE DAY AUGUST 31st, 1999 The world's tallest building came alive when it was presented to the world amidst a display of scintillating fireworks and a spectacular light and sound show in an opening ceremony that was filled with pomp and splendour. Petronas Towers is raising the curtain on the new Asia, and adding a bright page to architectural history.
