One of the most famous, if not the most well-known, of Plato's stories is the allegory of the cave. In this discussion, Plato speaks of people living in a cave for whom reality is represented by the shadows cast on the inner cave wall.
Essentially, the people have their backs to the cave entrance and see the world in terms of a shadow play that is projected onto the inner wall. The sad part of all this is that they never will know true reality until they turn around, walk to the cave entrance, and step out of the cave . . . if they dare.
